FOX Home Entertainment will abandon DVD releases of The Simpsons in favour of digital downloads.

Bad news if you are a collector of The Simpsons DVDs -they are calling it quits.

Yes the animated show has now been running for so long that DVDs are becoming archaic (apparently) and being superseded by digital downloads.

Series showrunner Al Jean told fans on his Twitter account that FOX Home Entertainment is ending production of DVDs for the series.

“I personally am v sorry to see DVDs discontinued. We did them purely for the love of hearing ourselves talk,” he wrote.

A distribution source told the Hollywood Reporter, “There’s so much happening in the digital space, it made more sense to focus on that.”

New episodes from Season 26 are airing in Australia Wednesday nights on ELEVEN.

  1. Read the headline and thought it meant that they would be moving to Blu-ray releases which would have been great.

Will be interesting to see how much they charge per season for the digital download.

  2. They release Keeping Up With the Kardashians on DVD yet they’re stopping The Simpsons? I’m a collector – I’ve got all of the ones that are available, as someone said, it’ll now be incomplete as they released 20 but have stopped at 17?!?! Really angry. As a consumer who doesn’t download and pays for the DVDs – it’s a slap in the face. As I seriously doubt the iTunes price will be as cheap, I won’t be purchasing – so as a massive Simpsons fan, I’ll be calling it a day. Really stupid move by Fox.

  3. Hmm, sales must be pretty dismal by their standards to end DVD releases. That said, considering Simpsons World was pegged as the “go to” destination to replace the DVD releases, it’d be nice if it wasn’t locked behind the FXX paywall, and limited to US only.

  4. I stopped buying them after season 5. Ch 10 just killed this show for me. I used to love it. Now, I haven’t watched it in years… I guess mine will be collectors item now 😉

Shame for all the collectors though….

  5. Absolute bull crap ive got all the seasons up to date now its a incomplete collection. if they charge $40 for the digital download per season the just want yo save the money on dvd and packaging. So disappointed 🙁

  6. I don’t know about the Australian iTunes seasons, but on the US iTunes seasons every episode is topped and tailed by ads for other Fox shows, something which doesn’t happen on the DVDs, which is why I’ve always preferred the DVDs.

  7. There is something about collecting physical copies of things, be it music, movies or TV shows you love.
I know its a sign of the future but we still like collecting things and this will likely lead to black market DVD copies.

  8. Remember too that the Simpsons (1989) pre-dates DVDs (1995), the WWW (1990-1991) and widespread internet use (early-mid 1990’s)…

    Feel old now? 😉

  9. No! I loved the DVD box-sets as I liked the character heads, the commentaries and deleted scenes. So is the seventeenth season the last DVD release?

  10. I am in complete disbelief. I’ve collected every box set (I’ve even bought both the DVD AND Blu-ray sets of the same seasons). This is such an incredibly, incredibly disrespectful spit in the face to longtime fans of the series and to those who have been supporting the home video releases for so long. Meanwhile, far lesser shows continue to be released on DVD. While the market may not be the same, I’m certain that the market is large enough to sustain releases of The Simpsons on DVD of all shows.

The DVDs and Blu-rays were a collector’s item first and foremost. If we were only interested in the episodes, there are other ways of obtaining them. I love The Simpsons, but if this is the thanks we get for our years of support, then they will never see another cent from me again.

  11. For car seat DVD players for the kids in the back?
Lucky people if you have a wired internet connection, and not still relying on limited wireless.

  12. It’s the only time I want to give Rupert Murdoch money – buying my Simpsons DVD boxsets.
Sorry Rupert, you’re going to have to go without a Maccas meal once a month now.

  13. It just won’t be the same without the large glossy colourful season box sets that have a bit of weight to it when u carry ’em home from the store.
