Mega-talent series American Idol will end in 2016 with one more season, bringing to an end a juggernaut of a show.

Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. will all return along with original host Ryan Seacrest.

FOX has confirmed it will stage a “season-long’ celebration of the series which has catapulted unknowns into stardom including Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Fantasia Barrino and Adam Lambert.

Additional judges have included Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Steven Tyler and Ellen DeGeneres while the roll call of superstar guests is endless.

American Idol, which began in 2002, has been the biggest ratings non-sports drawcard on American television in recent years.

This year’s final between Clark Beckham, Nick Fradiani and Jax airs 7:30pm Friday on ELEVEN.

Seacrest, out…!

  1. Is this the last iteration of Idol currently produced worldwide? Or is another country still producing Idol??
I thought Simon Cowell had wanted every country to have X Factor instead, so there was a big push to change everything over.

  2. Idol has always been my favourite of the singing competition franchises, but sadly American Idol has been fairly lacklustre over the past few seasons, and the saturation of the genre with other talent shows has taken its toll. Sad to see it go, but it’s time.
At least, unlike its competitors, it truly has created some international stars with career longevity.

  3. It’s been an extraordinary success, and nothing lasts forever; unless you’re animated, yellow and have voice over genius’s and comic writers….

  4. It will be sad to see it go. It has produced so much great talent although the past few sesaons have been really lacklustre so its no surprise really.
