Sunrise is adding live West Australian-based news into its bulletins.

Perth presenter Matt Tinney will present Live news to WA viewers from 7am today. The idea is designed to overcome viewers getting their updates 2 hours late, and 3 during summer.

Sunrise Executive Producer, Michael Pell said, “We’ve always had a heavy focus on WA – now we are taking our coverage to another level. This revolutionary live and local bulletin will seamlessly deliver the biggest and best stories in Perth and its surrounds. Together Perth’s Matt Tinney and Bunbury-born Natalie Barr have almost 40 years of experience. We can’t wait for them to bring more WA stories than ever before to our West Australian viewers.”

Natalie Barr said: “There are just so many stories coming out of Perth and regional WA, we had to make some more space to get them all in. As I’ve always told people in the east, WA is the biggest state … and such an important one. It needs its own news service, so here it is!”

But it also copies a move by Nine Perth which introduced Live WA news during Today in March 2014.

What do they say about imitation being the kindest form of flattery?

  1. So bloody typical of the disgraceful cheating channel 7. Can’t think of anything original, so they gotta follow the channels. One thing that is not noted in the article. Where did Matt Tinney come from Channel 9. Its a simple fact.

Its also very typical of Channel 7 to get their news paper, the biased The West Australian, to do their dirty work.

What a bunch of hypocrites Channel 7 and The West Australian.

  2. I liked the way Channel 7 Perth adds live and local news. Live and Local News will be better than the Delayed Sunrise News coming from Sydney studios.

  3. Nothing like being told “the Sydney siege inquest will start in about an hour…”, whilst over on ABC24 WA is being told “At the Sydney siege inquest that began an hour ago…”.
“This revolutionary live and local bulletin…”??? What in hell is so “revolutionary” about it?

  4. I recall reading an article in the West Australian (owned by 7) a few months ago bagging channel 9s “expensive foray into local content.” Oh the irony.

  5. I’ll be interested to see what 7 do — whether it’s just basic news or what Nine have been doing with interviews, live crosses to activities/events. It cannot be understated how much Nine has improved since takeover, WIN just really didn’t care. 7 needed a push too, they were getting lazy IMO.

    1. I agree completely. Lisa Fernandez has been a big coup for Nine, bringing a lot of enthusiasm to the live crosses and events in Perth. It will be a tough act for Seven to follow.

  6. Delayed network News programming has never really worked in WA, even more so since the advent of ABC News 24 which is always live into WA as it is across the whole nation. It is good to see Seven are now providing more live content in the morning too. The next step will be either Seven or Nine going fully live (and local if Sydney can’t be bothered to do WA only live backfill) in the mornings and during the day for News programming?
