Two more weeks until David Letterman farewell

Reasons why TEN could give Letterman a better timeslot for his last ever episode...

2015-05-06_1146

David Letterman’s last ever episode of The Late Show is now just two weeks away (and one day).

TEN will air it on Thursday May 21st, the same day it airs in the US after time zone adjustments.

It has scheduled it for 10:30pm which is earlier than its current playout.

But I would recommend bringing it forward to 9:30pm.

At the moment the schedule looks like this:

7:30pm MasterChef Australia
9:30pm Law & Order: SVU (rpt)
10:30pm The Late Show with David Letterman final.

Given SVU is a repeat, and the amount of press that his 30+ years on television will attract, I reckon this one deserves a 9:30pm scheduling for the occasion.

  1. @ David Knox – it appears TEN heard you cause according to tonight’s TV guide it will air at 9:30pm following MasterChef. I saw on the TV Lounge page you have lost TEN’s programming notifications and figured you could use the heads up. P.S. although TEN hasn’t notified you directly, could you still write a piece about Corden premiering on Sunday on ELEVEN.

  2. Noticed for the last week or so Letterman and The Project ‘Encore’ have switched places with Letterman on at 11:30 pm.

Are they slowly bringing the show forward before the final?

  3. I’ve been a fan of Letterman for years and even went and saw it being taped in New York once. I always tune in each night and watch The Project Encore and then Letterman but I do think Ten has missed a golden opportunity with this late night pairing by not giving it a regular 1030 starting time.
Letterman is going to be sorely missed. None of the other American late night shows come any where close to him. I really think it’s time for Aussie TV to give our own local version of a late night show another go. Vizard basically saved Channel 7 years ago with his Letterman rip off. All the networks here have shied away from prime time live shows but they need to give viewers a reason to put down their tablets etc and tune back in to watch content they’re not going to be able to see anywhere else or let’s face it, TV stations as we know them are basically going the same way as the…

  4. We’ve lost Conan, we’ve lost Craig and now we’re loosing Letterman. I wouldn’t complain except Conan is still going and the rest of the replacements aren’t turning up. At least when Colbert ended the Comedy Channel picked up his replacement.

  5. The last month of shows have been great – thank goodness for series link though with time slots all over the shop. Ten should realise that with ratings count to midnight that if you put a regular good quality show in a regular timeslot like 1030 or 1100 then people will watch. Hopefully Colbert will get one

      1. I’ve been really hanging out to see Corden in action. His Schwarzennegar, Beckham and Hanks videos have been superb! C’mon Ten – let’s see the new wave of late night shows!

  6. Agreed! I’d definitely tune in to the last episodes of Letterman…and would be tempted to keep up the habit with the new Colbert fronted version.

  7. I would have assumed the last show would be on a Friday night in the US but I guess not. Not sure about the earlier time, but I guess many viewers will tune in to check it out being the last show.

  8. Great idea, will wait to see if TEN takes heed of this as i am getting a bit over SVU repeats now. To me if they have a space “oh lets put SVU in there, most people will not realise that it is a repeat’ mind you it is better than the endless repeats of the Simpsons that we put up with a few years ago.

  9. I very much agree. Also with a late night/early morning encore for regular time slot viewers who might miss the change. The last couple of weeks have had some great episodes.

  10. It’s called The ‘Late’ Show with David Letterman. In the U.S. it airs from 11:30pm to 12:30am in most places? It’s a show built to be aired ‘late night’…
If they can handle it, I think we can stay up to 10:30…. lol at Australia

    1. Australia has watched late night talk shows as early as 7:30 and even arvos. In the US many primetime shows are 10:00.

10:30 is good but for the occasion, I would tip bigger ratings at 9:30 than SVU.

      1. It was always a strange thing that the ‘Late Late Show’ with Ferguson was shown on 11 earlier than the Letterman show, often by over an hour!

  11. it would be a nice touch to air it at 9.30pm also. A good way to end his longevity on the chat scene, and his time over on Ten.

Note that this week, the show will air at approx 12.30am each “night”, and then next week will air at 11.30pm, an improvement. Not sure about the final week bar the final.

  12. CBS aired a tribute to Letterman yesterday. Do you know if Ten will be airing that? I did ask Ten on their Facebook page when the special was first announced, but as usual they didn’t reply
