SBS will broadcast the upcoming Socceroos 2018 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifier matches, starting with a game against Kyrgyzstan next week.

The match will take place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, screening Live at 12:30am Wednesday June 17th (Tuesday night). It will air AEST in all cities.

SBS’s coverage of the first match will be hosted by Craig Foster, David Zdrilic plus Jason Culina and Craig Moore.

Ken Shipp, SBS’s Director of Sport said: “Australians love watching the Socceroos play. Last year millions of fans tuned in early to see them play in the FIFA World Cup on SBS. These matches are the first steps in their path to qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and I am pleased that once again SBS will make them available on Free-to-Air TV, radio and online.”

SBS holds the exclusive broadcast rights to the 2018 and the 2022 FIFA World Cups, currently set for Russia and Qatar respectively, but there are calls for them to be relocated.

  1. SBS do have the rights for the next two World Cups (2018 and 2022).

It’s great to see SBS airing these 5 qualification matches. Glad their on FTA rather than solely on pay tv.

It’s the upcoming A-League that may be on-sold to other network. It’s ratings for the normal season have sadly been less than average.

    1. Yep, agree. Think the World Cups are safe unless SBS’s funding is slashed but the A-League is likely to go – not because SBS can’t afford it but because the FFA weren’t happy with the numbers.

  2. The FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on SBS aren’t here to stay and neither is FIFA World Cups as who ever gains the FFA TV deal gains the rights to the WCQ. SBS are willing to onsold A League, Socceroos and World Cups. I thought the deal was 1 hour delayed not live. I wouldn’t be surprised if SBS does end up giving up the rights to commercial TV as Fairfax is normally right for TV deals.

    1. You are right in noting the Live element. SBS copy referred to Live for radio, hence the confusion. I have since corrected. But you’re not right in saying SBS is willing to sell FIFA World Cup. Senate hearings indicated they have the rights to 2022 (which we knew already). When asked they could not rule out on-selling them if the govt made further cuts. As Michael Ebeid noted 2022 is still a long way off, but he reiterated their desire to keep and commitment to football. A-League discussions appear to be ongoing, but FIFA is more valuable.

      1. Kick off is at midnight (according to Fox Sports). SBS was advertising on TV last night 12:30am “live” which is definitely misleading and deceptive.

Not that it matters to me because I will be recording the game to watch in the evening anyway.
