I see you Braxton brothers on Home and Away and I raise you Brennan brothers on Neighbours.

A third Brennan sibling will join Erinsborough next Tuesday, and by the looks of things he’s not only hot, he’s openly gay.

Actor Matt Wilson will play Aaron Brennan, middle brother to Mark and Tyler Brennan (played by Scott McGregor and Travis Burns).

As Mark struggles with Tyler’s secretive behaviour, he reaches out to Aaron for some brotherly support. Aaron comes to his brother’s aid and makes his presence in Erinsborough known thanks to an unforgettable gyrating Magic Mike routine.

Estranged from his family, after he disclosed his sexuality, Aaron’s arrival results in an unforeseen reunion for the Brennan brothers and heralds the first time the brothers have featured on Neighbours together.

The chemistry and rivalry between the brothers is infectious and the singles ladies and men of Ramsay Street will never be the same.

Series Producer, Jason Herbison, said: “Neighbours core is about families and we’ve had a lot of fun expanding the Brennan clan. Watch out – there are more to come.”

6:30pm Tuesday on ELEVEN.

  1. i think it’s great the way neighbours have integrated gay characters into the show, and make it seamless look at the kiss at the end on friday. they haven’t really focused on the introduction of the characters or over hyped them. Chris’s coming out story was so similar to so many of us. Aiden, Nate, and i can assume Aaron will again be non events and so they should be. As for the Lesbian population, there needs to be an actual story not just make a character a lesbian to act as a show pony. Don’t forget the lesbian population is represented in Wentworth. H&A on the other hand has opportunities to explore coming out in a small community, sadly they miss their chance with each new character introduced.

  2. I had guessed that the new Brennan brother would be gay, purley by elimination. There didn’t appear to be many current females characters he could be paired with. But Nate has been alone since Chris left, so…

  3. Good discussion 🙂 I watch Home & Away every night. I think that Oscar should have been a gay character. Tried watching Neighbours many times but, apart from Chris and his time with the swimmer, I just don’t engage with the other characters or actors, just do not like any of them, except for Scott McGregor. I also don’t believe the current relationship that Chris has, don’t like Nate at all. As for H&A getting flack for the lesbian character years back … absolutely lame excuse to not have a current gay character.

  4. I just want to know why both shows don’t repersent lesbian characters sure we seen both shows had storyline regarding lesbians but we haven’t had a female character on the cast who is gay my sister is gay & she gets angry that neighbours always put gay men on the show but no lesbians

    1. Neighbours famously had a sustained lesbian character in 2004, years before it returned to gay males. But it has been a while. In 2009 Home and Away had a lesbian character but it was badly handled and criticised. Suspect the network is not in any hurry to revisit.

      1. Yer I know I remember especially with home & away with Charlie the cop who fell in love with brax had a thing for a women & I definitely remember 2004 & also nothing went further was nicky whelan character shared a kiss With her friend but I don’t know all I’m saying if your going to Have gay characters you might also include some lesbian characters aswell as gay men on the show

  5. Neighbours have done a great job with their gay characters such as Nate and Chris, not resorting to making them gay stereotypes a lot of US and UK soaps have done.

  6. I do admire Neighbours for their consistent portrayal of gay characters … and Home and Away are a disgrace for not having at least 1 ongoing gay character … are they actually homophobic???
Still, it will probably not get me to be a regular Neighbours viewer, I don’t like most of the other characters or stories … sorry! 🙁

    1. The gay soapie character is now becoming a stereotype. Every soap must have one! Because if they don’t have at least one, they’re ‘homophobic’! Maybe this is why the ‘disgraceful’ Home & Away trounces Neighbours in the ratings.

      1. How is being representative of the population a stereotype? I’m not going to accuse H&A of being homophobic but I will say they are waaaay behind the times. It’s hardly the reason why the show rates better! Try the fact that its on Channel 7 in peak hour and hyped all year round whereas Neighbours gets no coverage at all.

I believe Neighbours is more popular in the UK so you can’t say a positive portrayal of gay characters is a ratings chalice.

        1. It’s a stereotype because so many shows now have them. The irony is that with so many shows trying to be ‘inclusive’ and trying to be seen to promote diversity, they’re all starting to look the same. If the stories are good enough, it shouldn’t matter who is in it or who isn’t in it.

          1. Chris Pappas in Neighbours was hardly a stereotype. He was in it long term and faced the same degree of soapie storylines as other young characters, whether related to his sexuality or not. What you see as stereotype others would see as addressing an overdue imbalance of society portrayed on screen. Were the newest addition camp and / or tragic you may have an argument.

          2. It’s years since I’ve followed any soaps. But I do remember the days when they just got on with entertaining their audiences with interesting and often funny plot lines. Nobody cared that they weren’t ‘reflective of society’ and I question whether it’s the job of the current soaps to attempt to do that. After all, the bottom line is that they’re commercial operations.

          3. If you’re not watching these soaps is it really fair to suggest they are just stereotypes? In any case is it really that much of a problem if 1 of 20 or so characters is gay? The question should really be why isn’t there more diversity in our dramas, just as Miranda Tapsell has reminded us.

          4. I see the promos and catch a few minutes here and there when visiting. Nothing I see makes me want to watch the current soaps. There’s no problem if a character happens to be gay but does it have to be compulsory for all shows as Michael Young suggests above? If Home & Away choose not to have a gay character then that’s their decision. If it’s a wrong decision then people will switch off. It’s not as if Neighbours gay storylines are likely to have a huge influence on society anyway. I believe it pulls around 400,000 viewers per episode, which means that over 22 million people aren’t watching it.

          5. Neighbours is made mainly for the UK audience isn’t it?
I never said it was “compulsory”, just that it disappointing and very annoying to me as a long time regular H&A viewer. And a missed/wasted opportunity. 🙂
