Miss Fisher finale: “Anything is possible!”

Will Phryne & Jack finally deliver the moment fans have been waiting for?

Diehard Miss Fisher fans, Essie Davis has a message for you in this week’s season finale: “Anything is possible.”

For three seasons Phryne Fisher and Detective ‘Jack’ Robinson (Nathan Page) have kept a professional relationship, while fans have been wanting them to resolve their obvious attraction.

It was almost realised in last year’s Christmas special. But not quite.

“They turned it into an almost-kiss, interrupted by Aunt Prudence!” she tells TV Tonight.

“It’s this delightful conundrum they have. They are such different people and as much as they dig each other, Phryne’s not going to marry Jack and Jack’s not going to let Phryne sleep around!

“So they can never really be together and completely satisfy one another. The desire to be together is something that they know if it’s consummated will leave them in a mess.

“I think they’d like it to be consummated so it’s that wonderful ‘push you / pull you’ of wanting someone on your own terms, not necessarily on their terms.

“I think Phryne could make Jack jump off a cliff if she was daring enough!”

But romance is never far from the murder mysteries occupying the daring world of Miss Fisher. Well-regarded for showcasing women’s issues in is period era, the series has crafted her as progressive for a modern audience.

“It’s not like she doesn’t fall in love. Even though we only see little snippets of her life each week, she has old flames who meant something,” she explains.

“She loves the falling in love and the sensuality of it all but she’s not going to be anyone’s minion or compromise who she is for anyone.”

“I’m sure there will be more in some capacity…”

Last year when ABC was slow to renew the series fans took to petitions and social media to plead for more. With Essie Davis nominated for a Gold Logie, they got their wish. Here’s hoping they won’t have to wait so long for a fourth season?

“Who knows at this point? It’s an amazing thing that it is so loved around the world and that people are dying for it. There’s a Festival of Phryne on in Melbourne and the Americans are asking, ‘When is it coming to America?’ They say ‘I looked for it on ABC but does that mean the Australian ABC?’” says Davis.

“What I love about the end story of Series 3 is that anything can happen. But who knows?

“I love Phryne and I’m incredibly proud to be her. I’m sure there will be more in some capacity…”

With recent films like The Babadook and the BBC telemovie A Poet in New York, finding time for the in-demand Ms. Davis may be one of the challenges for future adventures. Miss Fisher has opened new doors.

“She has certainly raised my profile, which is a funny old thing,” she admits.

“There are a lot of great actors out there who don’t get opportunities. Mine has been a slow and steady (race).

“In the industry I’ve always been regarded highly, but that (hasn’t meant) I could fund a film. But Phryne has brought many great things into my life and taught me a hell of a lot.”

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries finale airs 8:30pm Friday on ABC.

  1. Is there some kind of campaign to rip this show to shreds or something? I don’t get it, we must be watching a different show. The one I am watching is beautifully put together, wonderfully acted by all, cleverly scripted and a joy to watch. It’s the only show I must watch each week when it’s on and would be terribly sad if there were no season 4 and I know a lot of people who would feel the same. The only bad thing about the show is that it’s not long enough.

  2. Sigh. Same comments since 2012. Axe it. Dreadful acting. Lead is a cardboard box. Dr Blake is better. Probably insiders commenting since I can’t see why anyone could be arsed to conduct a negative campaign.

Unlike Dr Blake the show is a success. Something must be right about it. Like a wonderful female lead, strong permanent cast and wonderful chemistry between this cast. Watch something else if you like but there is no reason to axe Miss Fisher. Enough of the shabby treatment and negativity fans have had to endure since the end of Series 2.

    1. Why does everyone have to share your opinion? Others are entitled to have a different opinion. You bemoan the negative comments about Miss Fisher, then follow up with a negative comment about Dr Blake. Glass houses.

      1. Miss Fisher is a greater success than Dr Blake by any measure. I am just correcting your comment not rubbishing Dr Blake.

If I don’t like a show I move on after initial criticism. I don’t haunt the pages of the show and keep criticising it. In the same way over and over again.

        1. Nor do I. Nor do I like you correcting my comment.
I compared Dr Blake’s Australian ratings with those of Miss Fisher. By that measure, Miss Fisher is not a greater success. Please check for yourself before correcting others.

          1. Facebook is nor ratings but pretty sure 104K vs 8000+ has to mean something in our social media age. I go to the ABC shops often and I am afraid there was no Dr Blake buzz like for Miss Fisher. No Festival of Blake either.

Also puzzled why you want to post on a Miss Fisher page asking it to be not renewed. Blake has been renewed and that’s what you want. If you ignored the article it makes sense but this commenting seems like vested interests. The only reason I mention Dr Blake btw is because it seems to be brought up every time there is a Miss Fisher article, Miss Fisher fans truly don’t care if Blake continues or not.

          2. It’s possible to like both shows. Better to relate your views than to speak on behalf of others. Hopefully there will be good news for Miss Fisher soon.

    1. Spend it on what though Simmo? More depressing, slow, pseudo-artsy rubbish about dull Australians in crisis? No thankyou!! The ABC has wasted too much money already on that garbage. Our comedies aren’t much better either. Phryne Fisher might have been a bit disappointing this year, but it still fills a nice gap on a Friday night. Sadly not many other Australian productions lately come close to being as entertaining (The Secret River aside, IMO).

    2. I disagree with this. Miss Fisher has a large fanbase overseas, with lots of international interest from buyers. I’m not sure many other ABC shows attract this interest, or any other Australian program to be honest.

  3. Ratings are well down this season, although that’s true of many shows this year. However, Dr Blake, a better show IMO, has rated much better.
I’d rather the ABC spend its resources elsewhere. Miss Fisher has become repetitive and boring.

  4. I can’t believe a character like Phryne would be the slightest bit attracted to a character like Jack – he should have been bumped off ages ago and replaced by someone with a bit of charisma. The actor playing Jack, unfortunately for him, has all the appeal of a cardboard box. Terrible casting.

There’s a lot of bad acting (scripting?) in Phryne Fisher, but it looks gorgeous.

    1. Agreed. I think the only thing going for it is the costumes which I have to admit are very well done. The rest comes across as a not terribly good high school production and I struggle to understand its popularity. Incidentally, as I understand it’s set in 1920s Melbourne, one thing the era is not is “Victorian”. While the 1920s look pretty backward compared to today, compared to the actual Victorian era women had substantially greater social and economic freedom.

    2. The actor playing Jack (Nathan Page) is not only attractive beyond belief (he is), he breathes life into the character as much as Essie Davis does for Phryne. The subtlety with which he brings out all the nuances of the character without just focussing on making him conventionally “charming” is amazing, particularly given that he could so easily go the “charming” route with that face and voice. He and Essie together with the rest of the main cast really make the show special. No wonder it’s getting such a worldwide fan base, even in non-English-speaking countries!

  5. The ABC wasn’t slow to renew Miss Fisher, they axed it to allocate the money to other shows targeting a younger audience meaning the cast had to look for other work. By then it had started to bring in OS and cable sales, along with the money from the Victorian government, it turned out to be bad decision. So they made a short 8 episode series for this year.

They haven’t announced a S4 and there there is usual talk of TVMs, which means that money and availability haven’t been sorted out for anything in 2016 yet.
