US actor Dustin Diamond, who played ‘Screech’ in the 1990s sitcom Saved by the Bell has been sentenced to four months in jail following a bar fight during which he stabbed a man on Christmas Day.

LA Times notes a judge also sentenced him to 15 months of probation, and ordered to stay away from the victim and from the bar in Wisconsin. He also must maintain “absolute sobriety” and refrain from all controlled substances until his probation ends.

Last month, Diamond, 38, was convicted of two misdemeanours stemming from the fight: carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct. He was cleared of a felony charge.

He claimed that he had taken a knife out during the fight to scare patrons, including a woman he said had punched his girlfriend, but stabbed a man by accident.

Witnesses testified that Diamond’s girlfriend, Amanda Schutz, had initiated the fight. She was convicted of disorderly conduct and ordered to pay restitution and court fees, the court said.
