Singer Hayley Teal, who appeared on The X Factor in 2010, has spoken out against the series five years later, accusing the Seven show of ramping up an emotional backstory.

The 25 year old, who was mentored by Natalie Imbruglia told News Corp, “They pegged me as the gay girl. They really wanted me to cry about it, and say: ‘My life has been so hard.’ But I’ve had a great life.”

She claims a senior producer wanted her to say she had been bullied and discriminated, but it didn’t fit with her past.

“Everyone was cool when I came out. They were like, ‘Whatever.’”

Teal, who has worked as a singing teacher, is now releasing an EP and says she doesn’t regret appearing on the show.

“It opened a lot of doors and I was busy for a good year or so with work. I’m grateful for that.”

  1. Have no interest in any backstories on any reality show. When backstories are mentioned tend to tune out. If over the top with backstories tend to stop watching the show altogether.

  2. I loved her on the show, wanted her to win. I don’t think she was portrayed as ‘the gay girl’ at all, she came out in the audition, I don’t recall it being referenced ever again. Last season on DWTS it seemed she was going for the singers job. Would love to see her there this season.

Hardly the worst fabricated sob story, how abouts Harrison Craig’s crippling stutter that only appeared in pre-recorded parts of the show.

  3. Releasing an EP? No wonder she’s making a story. Of course producers amp up fake stories. I don’t think anyone would be surprised that reality isn’t real
