Dancing with the Stars shoves live band into “the car park”

After 14 seasons, someone decides it was time to get Chong Lim and the band off the set. Why?

The good news: Shane Bourne was almost seamless in his debut as the new Dancing with the Stars host, showing his skill at Live performance.

The bad news: After 14 seasons, who decided to remove the band from the set? The show is now far less-dynamic, with electronic backdrops offering flat visuals instead of Live musicians.

Bourne joked that his arrival on the show meant that the band were now on the “other side of the studio.” Try another room in the same building -or as one social media user suggested, “in the car park.”

A Seven spokesperson told TV Tonight the change meant there was more space both on stage and for the band. There would be more space without a Live audience too, but people sometimes add a dynamic that is irreplaceable.

The US version also removes the band from the set, but original series Strictly Come Dancing in the UK, retains them.

  1. Oh dear! Don’t like the hosts … fast forward … don’t like most of the contestants …. fast forward … Stop for Matthew Mitcham … fast forward … Bruno is far too Over The Top … fast forward … don’t like the crappy “green room”, very awkward … fast forward … it must be the gayest show on TV between those two judges and Matt … fast forward … why did they shaft the band? … fast forward … Oh! That was quick … only had about 30 minutes of content worth watching! Sad really!

  2. Good point about the band MIA. The biggest point however is the very lazy director and camera work. Seems to be no planning at all. Aren’t they at rehearsals? Do they just turn up for the live show and hope for the best? Where are the closeups when you need them most? When we got medium close-ups, we got backs not even an expressive face looking over a shoulder. We got plenty of long and overhead shots, obviously ramming down our throats that the band was gone and the room looked bigger but the action and emotion was totally missing. The only dramatic scene caught all night was the show-stopper ending of Matthew Mitcham’s final pose and then, even that was captured in a frantic slightly delayed rush, reminiscent of a fowl pan (which true directors worth their salt would understand). Every dance piece should have at least 6 or so pre-planned shots which are forwardly targeted and…

  3. Hi. The band – Chong Lim, are integral to the success of this show. I don’t like the ‘green room’, or the wall space at the end of the basketball stadium. Like Shane myself, but I’m also looking pretty dated. Loved that by closing his tummy jacket, kept it real. Not crazy about the new judge, who needs to learn to share. Critical! My 14yo and I love this show. Please don’t call names to the exquisite and shy, Samantha Harris – ‘baby giraffe’, and ‘bambi’ – respect. Will continue to watch for my daughter’s sake, but things aren’t quite the same. Please -who was eliminated? I called it bedtime.

  4. I think Shane Bourne as a host would have worked like 10 years ago as Darryl’s replacement. At present, I personally find him a bit boring as a host. And I love Bruno although he may be an acquired taste to some. And both Todd and especially Helen seemed a bit uptight when Bruno speaks. At least Kim goes with the atmosphere.

  5. Good a performer as Shane Bourne is, his humour is cringe worthy and dated. For a show that struggled in the demos with a young host, he seems an odd choice to have replaced Dam McPherson.
Further odd is having Larry Emdur competing when I reckon he should be hosting the thing!

  6. I thought it was poor form also that they didn’t acknowledge and thank the band at the end of the episode given how much they contribute to the show.
