Telstra TV set for September

Three streaming platforms, one destination.

Telstra has partnered with US streaming platform Roku with plans to launch in Australia as Telstra TV from September.

It hopes to offer Netflix, Presto and Stan in a single destination, bundled for less than $30 a month.

The Roku 2 box retails at $US59 in the United States, and is expected to cost about $100 locally.

Catch-up services will also be on offer, but it isn’t clear if Foxtel Play would be included.

A Stan app won’t be available at first, however Telstra media managing director Joe Pollard told news.com.au that it would be available soon after the launch.

  1. The original press release in the SMH said “Users will still need to pay subscription fees to these SVOD services” meaning Netflix, Stan etc. Not my understanding of “aggregation”. For more details and the fine print we might have to “wait until September”. Sounds like a song title?

  2. This article came at the right time for me! I was about to upgrade my Foxtel IQ device and sub, and try to negotiate a good deal (bearing in mind the number of unwatchable stations Foxtel has now, due to ads on previously “no ads” channels and excessive ads and promos on all the others). However it might be better to wait until September, when Foxtel subscribers are leaving them in droves!
(I’m not a fan of streaming, owning a Chromecast device bought a few months ago which is still in the unopened box.)

  3. I think more to the point is why does the device cost almost double outright then it does in the states? Having Presto, Stan and Netflix in the one device for one monthly fee makes sense.

  4. I wonder if they will also keep and continue to use the T-Box. This new device seems to be only for streaming and not watching TV, recording etc that can be done via the T-Box.

      1. No idea what you’re talking. about. At $100 that particular hardware is expensive, in both an absolute way and competitively to other hardware in that niche. The subscription fees are on top of that. Pays to actually read the article before you comment.

      2. “The Roku 2 box… is expected to cost about $100 locally.”
What’s to understand? The box costs $100.
“It hopes to offer Netflix, Presto and Stan in a single destination, bundled for less than $30 a month.”
“Hopes to…” – So far it sounds like a box with nothing in it.
