War and Peace is not just a great novel it’s a wonderful read and it’ll make a wonderful serial – a thrilling, funny and heartbreaking story of love, war and family life. The characters are so natural and human and easy to identify with and Natasha Rostova just beats Lizzy Bennet as the most lovable heroine in literature,” said Davies.

Tim Christlieb, Director of Channels, BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand, said: “This is one of the most ambitious event dramas ever-produced for the BBC and we’re delighted to bring it to Australian audiences on BBC First.”

War and Peace is directed by Tom Harper and produced by BBC Cymru Wales Drama, in partnership with The Weinstein Company and BBC Worldwide/Lookout Point.

It will screen on BBC First in 2016.

  1. I think it was the Waterloo movie that used the Soviet Army. It can all be done by one guy in costume and CGI now. I love War and Peace (read the book a couple of times), so looking forward to it.

  2. The production details for this show would be interesting, the previous effort filmed some decades ago used members of the soviet army to recreate the battle scenes.

  3. It’s a difficult production to make unless you are in a position to borrow someone’s army for the war scenes-I well remember the 1970s series on the ABC with the Yugoslavs providing the battle extras-otherwise it’s a hundred men CGI’ed into 100,000.
