The future of Game of Thrones was discussed at the Television Critics Association tour, after showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had been quoted as saying that they’d envisioned the series to run for seven seasons.

“Seven seasons and out was never the case,” said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming. “The question is how much beyond (seven seasons) it will go.”

“David and Dan are feeling there are two more years after Season 6, that’s what we’re looking at right now. We hope that they would change their mind, but for that’s how they are feeling now.”

Would HBO consider extending the franchise with a prequel series? “We would be open to anything [Benioff and Weiss] want to do, there is enormous amount of storytelling in that world,” Lombardo said. But at that point, “the focus is on figuring out the next season.”

And on the topic of on Jon Snow’s death: final or not?

“Dead is dead as dead as dead. He be dead. Yes. Everything I’ve seen, heard, read, Jon Snow is indeed dead,” he said.

  1. Seven books, seven series would have been and obvious starting point. Book 3 took nearly two seasons, but they have moved quickly through books 4 and most of book 5 in S5. In S6 they will finish book 5 and move well into book 6. Martin has promised to have book 6 out by April to coincide with the show (but who knows). That leaves them 2 seasons to wind it all up, which seems about right and will fit with the audience’s patience.

Whatever happens the TV show will now finish years before Martin ends A Song of Fire and Ice in book 7 (or 8?), and it’s increasing diverging from Martin’s story.

HBO would obviously like GOT to run forever, but no one is going to be thinking seriously about spinoffs until the show finishes A Song of Fire and Ice. It’s too big a production for anybody to fund or make 2 of them.
