Still a Mexican stand-off over WAFL ‘logo-gate’

Falcons club & the WA Football Commission fail to reach an outcome this week over Channel Nine logos.

Discussions between WA football club West Perth and the WA Football Commission failed to reach an outcome this week, as the West’s stoush over TV logos on jumpers drags on.

Channel Seven is refusing to broadcast games featuring the Falcons team while their jumpers feature a Nine News logo.

“The West Australian Football Commission and West Perth Football Club advise that a constructive meeting was held between the two parties tonight and that discussions are continuing to work towards a resolution in the ensuing days regarding the WAFL Finals broadcast matter,” the WAFC and West Perth said in a joint statement.

“A series of options are being explored to reach a resolution in the best interests of both the competition and the club. An update on any resolution will be provided as soon as practicable.”

West Perth president Brett Raponi said the club also feared the WAFC would threaten to cut its annual $600,000 subsidy.

“It is a significant amount of money for us. Our concern is they could target that,” he told News Corp.

“We feel we have a strong legal position.

“The clauses that they (WAFC) say we are in breach of, we have refuted (after taking legal advice).”

West Perth takes on Peel this Saturday in the qualifying final at HBF Arena.

As WA Today notes, if the Falcons make it to the WAFL Preliminary final and then the grand final, things will get very messy….

  1. Just another example of Nine and Sevens war with each other that no one cares about but them. I can just imagine all the boardroom backslapping over each little win to the detriment of their viewers.

  2. I can understand why 7Perth is being pissy. 7Perth do not want to give NinePerth free publicity if they were too broadcast West Perth games. 7Perth believe it would be a large insult to them if they broadcast West Perth games because they would be giving Nine Perth free publicity.

    1. They have given 9News far more publicity though by refusing to screen the games. Had they screened them nobody would have even noticed the 9News sponsorship.

    2. 7 should just say if the Falcons are in the finals they will broadcast it, the finals are different from the rest of the season. 7 need to look up the Streishand effect and get over it.

  3. I would tear up Seven’s contract if I was the WAFC but if the WAFC are taking 7’s side then they are just as bad as Seven. Grow up 7 and WAFC. It would be there own fault if the major finals aren’t televised. If Nine takes the sponsorship away from West Perth then they probably won’t survive as sponsors are critical to survival. This has been gone on far too long and good on Nine for sticking it up to the so called “home of football”. I am pretty sure Nine have said they would televise East Perth matches then that is good from Nine but so petty from 7.

  4. I can’t see any damage to channel seven if a club wears a logo. I can see damage to local AFL ( possibly to the national game) and to this club. Ch7 better have a big cheque book, because you got played by ch9.

  5. Do Seven realize how immature and petty this is. The only winners out of this debacle are Nine and West Perth. The way Seven have acted through this I really hope West Perth make the Grand Final because they need a good kick up the ass to make them see sense.
