A number of readers have asked about new Nine channel numbers being auto-detected on their TVs and PVRs yesterday.
Here is a note Nine sent to staff earlier this week which should explain:
Please be advised the modifications to Nine’s channel numbering scheme (Logical Channel Numbers) in Darwin, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth will proceed tomorrow – Wednesday 30th September.
The purpose of these changes is to allow viewers to access Nine’s channels sequentially from 90 through to 95 by pressing up or down on their remote.
Nine, GO, GEM and Extra will remain in their current channel location with additional copies as follows:
Nine will remain on Channel 9 and will also appear on Channel 91
GEM will remain on Channel 90 and will also appear on Channel 92
GO will remain on Channel 99 and will also appear on Channel 93
In Perth only, Extra 2 will be removed from Channel 92 and replaced with a copy of GEM.
Changes will be rolled out progressively to all markets commencing at 10:00AEST.

I have a Panasonic television three years old supposedly the latest tech. I selected Channel 90 and got sound with a message on the screen – No Video. I did an autoscan which erased existing data. Now Channel 90 has gone completely. It says invalid channel. It looks like Channel 90 doesn’t exist, for me! Also why is ABC Channel 20, the news channel, 24 on my TV? It is not possible to change the channel numbers on the really modern Panasonics.
No HD cricket for me then!
Help info is here: http://tvtonight.com.au/2015/11/rescan-your-tv-for-9hd-launch.html
Happy to see 2 channel nine’s same as there are 3 channel 7, that means I can record two consecutive shows separately, instead of 1 long recording!!
Thanks for the headsup. I have got the rescan out of the way before setting up stuff to record.
I like the sequential numbers to move around. I use 71,2, 10,11,12 and 21,2 as easy to remember short-cuts. With all the duplicates and shopping channels it’s a real pain to +/- through to where you want to go.
Seems bizarre to have 2 copies of Gem so close to each other. Unless we’re going to see 9 Nine HD, 90 Nine HD, 91 Nine SD, 92 Gem and 93 Go in the not too distant future?
Suspect they’ll only double up temporarily and ditch the old channel numbers once the new numbers are established.
While I’m delighted 9 got rid of 92 for Extra 2 (who needs two copies of that?) I think they should have just left it as 90 – GEM, 91 – Nine, 94 – Extra, 95 – Extra2, 99 – GO!. Now there are 2 GO!’s and 2 GEM’s essentially next to each other, what’s the point?
Don’t really see the need for this, all you have to do it set the channels as favourites in the order you wish, and ensure you’ve not included the datacasts, because frankly, why bother with those. My equipment is set to ABC1,2,3,24 SBS1,2,NITV, 7,Two,Mate 9,GEM,GO Ten,11,ONE.
Not all of them allow you to set the order of channels. Nine were the only network that did not have their channels grouped until now.
