Showbiz runs in the family as Eddie McGuire’s son Xander, 12, is to appear in Neighbours.

He will have a guest role playing Charlie Hoyland, the eldest son of Steph Scully (Carla Bonner), who has been living in Fiji with his father Max Hoyland following Steph’s initial incarceration.

The announcement sees Xander start a professional career, ignited by a school musical performance, back at the same building where his father began his TV career. Eddie McGuire began as a cadet sports reporter for TEN.

“It’s an amazing first job in the industry. Neighbours has been such a big part of Australian television and has launched so many careers. I’m really excited.”

Joking about Steph Scully’s screen-life he added, “Marriage, step-children, battled cancer, had a son, was stabbed, then sent to prison for manslaughter and followed this up with a kidnapping – and I thought I had an interesting family in real life!”

The character has previously been played by Jacob Brito and Aaron Aulsebrook-Walker, first appearing as a “miracle baby.”

Series Producer Jason Herbison said: “I’m thrilled to have Xander playing a character that already has a significant history with the show. I have no doubt he will do a sterling job continuing the character’s story.”

McGuire begins filming this Friday and will debut on screen in early 2016.

  1. Good on him!
I wondered if they would bring Charlie back now Steph is back.
Look forward to seeing him on screen.

I agree with previous comments about the departures etc.

  2. I agree with the departures. Naomi’s was so unrealistic. I get the actress playing her has just had a baby so they needed an exit but for her to suddenly get this pr job after 1 interview in a day then have to fly to LA the next morning was just un realistic.

    1. Yes Naomi’s exit was all of a sudden and came as a surprise. I havn’t heard anything, but I”m hoping she’s just on maternity leave and will be back eventually.

  3. Carla Bonner recently confirmed via her Twitter account that Steph isn’t going anywhere and that she is back on Neighbours permanently. The updated opening titles should be seen shortly.

  4. This must mean that Steph Scully is back for more than just a few weeks like I thought. Neighbours have been quiet this year on their cast coming and goings, it was a surprise to see some of them leave this year as usually we find out months beforehand. Annoyingly, all the exists are so rushed, like “I’m going to LA, tomorrow!” I don’t get why they can’t have a gradual exit.
