This week Animal Planet screens the doco Racing Extinction which will screen in 220 countries across 24 hours, beginning in New Zealand and concluding in the US.

Mass extinction. Global climate change. Illegal wildlife traffic. There has never been a more vital time to take action to improve humanity’s impact on the planet. On Wednesday 2 December at 9.00pm Discovery Channel and Animal Planet will premiere Racing Extinction, a powerful eco-thriller from Academy Award-winning director Louie Psihoyos (The Cove), to a global audience.

In this must-see documentary, Louie Psihoyos and the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) assemble a team of artists and activists to embark on a new undercover operation to expose the world of endangered species trafficking and the race to prevent mass extinction. Infiltrating the world’s most dangerous black markets, the team use covert tactics and state-of-the-art technology to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction. The result: confronting, never-before seen images that will change the way we see the planet.

Scientists predict that the human footprint on the planet may cause the loss of half of the world’s species by the end of the century. Evidence shows that humanity has sparked a cataclysmic change of the world’s natural environment and animal life. We are the only ones who can stop the change we’ve created and Psihoyos’ mission is to inspire us all to embrace the solutions that will ensure a thriving, biodiverse world for future generations.

9pm Wednesday December 2 on Animal Planet.
