No Live streaming roll-out for TEN just yet

Tenplay is Live streaming selected shows, but isn't planning a full suite of channels as yet.

While Seven’s Live streaming of its channels is underway and Nine has confirmed its intent for early 2016, TEN is remaining cautious but monitoring with interest.

Whilst Tenplay is already streaming some of its shows, such as The Project and TEN Eyewitness News, it will predominantly remain a catch-up service for now.

TEN chief digital officer Rebekah Horne told the Australian Financial Review “We’ve been doing Live streaming for some of our shows for about four years. Typically they’re in the morning or what would be considered peak commute time, from 5pm through.”

But she says consumer demand isn’t quite there yet, combined with the cost of delivering the content.

“We’re certainly set up for it. We’ve got live ad insertion technology, which means that we can replace existing ads with new ads and that’s what we do today when we live stream shows.”

TEN will also wait and see how the SVOD market played out before deciding whether it would take up its 10% option of Presto, as part of the recent Foxtel / TEN partnering.

  1. I don’t really understand the cost argument. How can it Live streaming cost any more than making catch up shows available? And wouldn’t those costs be offset by the advertising in the live stream? If someone could explain that I would be great (excuse my ignorance).

  2. I have had a pretty good experience with Ten play to date. Shows have been ready as soon as they have aired. Unlike foxtel go (commonly miss uploading an EP) or SBS ondemand (where they have jumbled up the order and wreck the episode). I’d much rather Ten put their money into making it the best catch up service (no lagging, easily pause, rewind, seamless ad integration etc) rather than live steam all their shows.

  3. Ten have had the best commercial network digital platform since launching Tenplay but now they risk falling behind the competition by not offering the majority of the content via live stream. It is more than likely a financial issue.
    There is a work around.

  4. Really need to make a move on this before people form habits..
They need to sort out the Application they have on Apple TV as well.
Content need to be updated quicker.

  5. If your focus is your catch up services than make sure tenplay apps actually work. Tried to reinstall the tenplay windows phone app after deleting it a few weeks ago to check if the issues that caused me to delete have been fixed. Its even worse now. The app won’t even load now. It just says there is no internet connection despite there being a working internet connection. Maybe you need to spend sometime reading the latest app reviews cause I ain’t the only one experiencing this issue.

    1. Considering they sacrificed the whole “TenHD” branding for One, I doubt they’d go back.
I just wish they would utilise the HD branding more- lately I haven’t seen it under the One logo or in ads for One.
I also wish it would go back to being a more sports orientated channel- it would be a point of difference between the lifestyle/glorified infonercial channels popping up everywhere.
