First-rate UK drama The Missing has its Free to Air premiere with a double episode, Wednesday, 8.30pm January 6th on SBS.
Starring James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor, it will continue each Wednesday at 9.30pm thereafter.
The eight-part series that explores the emotional cost of a child’s abduction has been critically received, with many observers noting its similarities to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Tony Hughes, played by James Nesbitt (Cold Feet), and his wife Emily, played by Frances O’Connor (A.I. Artificial Intelligence), are holidaying in France when their five year-old son Oliver disappears, setting off a manhunt that spans over several years, across two countries.
Told through a delicate and complex narrative that reflects the fractured and frantic battle for a lost child, The Missing is a thrilling and heart-breaking drama of a life consumed by hope, love, truth and obsession.
A gripping puzzle with twists and turns at every stage, The Missing starts with an event that could happen to anyone and continues with Tony’s exhaustive search, which fractures his marriage to Emily and threatens to destroy his life.

It makes for grim but entertaining viewing … and yes, the ending was almost as weird as the ending to The Prisoner.
I hated the ending to this 8 episode series. Most unsatisfying ending ever
Is it worth watching though?
Absolutely.
Yes it is. Excellent series. Requires close viewing though, as it jumps around in time quite extensively.
Maybe “the ending” has something to do with a series 2 being in the works.
I’m not a fan of shows that jump timezones too much unless they do it well.
I think I will be giving it a go.
I personally wouldn’t recommend watching it cause the ending was so bleak. A simple google search of ‘the missing’ shows several mixed reactions to the finale wih one UK newspaper calling it ‘a manipulation too far’. But then again it is summer here and barely anything worth watching on. Perhaps give the first episode a go and see if you like it.
By the way the second season will feature a new cast and new characters, set in Germany, following an adult woman who goes missing and then returns. There will be no continuation of season one
@MuchoTB
That’s what I was thinking. Not much on in January so might be worth checking out the 1st ep and see if its worth watching.
