Karl Stefanovic rumours & renewals

Speculation Karlos has rejected an offer to join Seven, for a hefty price tag at Nine.

Karl Stefanovic is apparently set to reject an offer to join Seven and renew his contract with Nine.

News Corp suggests the Today host will land a $6m multi-year deal, earning $2m a year for three years.

There has been speculation Seven tried to lure him across to host a revamped Today Tonight, together with the carrot of Olympics host (Disclaimer: it really was just a joke when TV Tonight linked both ideas in October).

The Gold Logie winner is known for being the subject of contract negotiation rumours, with some suggestion he even uses it strategically.

Nine had already linked his name to Today and The Verdict for 2016, despite the ink not being added to contracts, but indicated it had a contingency plan if he did not return. Stories continue to speculate he wants out of the early morning shifts.

Most media stories that put rumoured price tags on talent are just that: rumours. For the most part not even publicists are privy to actual salaries that are locked in between management and agents.

  1. Perhaps Stefanovic might have been an option for the 7 News desk in Sydney because Ferguson certainly hasn’t set the world on fire. As for The Verdict, the only reason it would be returning is to give Stefanovic a primetime show. However, Michael Usher proved half the issue with The Verdict is Stefanovic’s terrible as a moderator.

  2. That amount of money paid to this guy is absolutely stupid, don’t think even the Prime Minister would get that much, by paying people this amount of money is probably why it was going down hill a year or two ago when the hedge funds had to step in to prop them up and at this rate I can see the same thing happening again if they keep up paying ridiculous amounts of money to people that don’t deserve it.

  3. Sorry I have know brickies with more talent that that goose and they know more about the world than he does as well, madness by 9 again try 9 cents

  4. No doubt Karl has settled nicely into his today role from those early days but l feel anyone could do just as well. I feel he values himself more than a morning host. The Verdict is no a good look on his CV and l doubt it will do much better with a different time slot. He could take over ACA but l think Liela McKinnon could do that role just as well.

  5. Glad to see you stay with Nine, Karl. Don’t settle for Seven’s desperation to try and beat Nine’s news ratings supremacy. I suppose money talks, but did /would anyone believe he would sink to the level of Today Tonight trash? Or was the purpose being he would raise the bar and bring the show some credibility?

Y’know, I used to think the same about Tracy Grimshaw. In the end, she didn’t even change channels…

  6. Hard to know if this is real or a strategy by his agent to drive his price up. Not sure he is worth that much for 9 to hold onto – particularly when neither of his shows are winning their timeslots. If he is indeed after a prime time move, excluding money, surely 7 would be a preferred option with the potential of TT, 7 news, Olympics, and perhaps even a joint hosting of Sunday Night. 9 doesn’t seem to have the same offers available….

  7. Seven will be laughing knowing they’ve made Nine pay him $2m a year which is just ridiculous and will probably have to keep The Verdict on the air which will come close to being the flop of the year.
