Rumour: Seven to launch movie channel?

Seven's newest channel will launch in February -but guesses continue on the content.

Seven’s newest channel is set to launch in February.

While there are whispers of a possible movie channel, the network remains tight-lipped on the content and branding.

Network Director of Programming Angus Ross confirmed to TV Tonight, “We are launching a new channel in February and things will be announced soon.”

Nine recently launched lifestyle channel 9Life while SBS has added its Food Network.

Having a fourth channel has no doubt helped Nine’s summer share.

With Seven launching a fourth entertainment channel, attention will surely to TEN and whether it plans to match its competition.

  1. Probably thinking – 7kids? Most of the children’s programming from 7Two and 7mate will be moved to that new channel. Not just that but include more animated shows as well.

    1. Being that they’re linked a lot a with Disney, if they went the kid route it could be Disney branded.
That would give them a leg up if they had Disney on their name.

  2. Interesting hearing about this new channel. TEN had ONEHD before that TENHD, sports channel is great but has to be executed correctly, TEN did not, they didnt have enough live content duringthe week and bairly anything on weekendds that would draw a mass crowd overall, TEN needed Rugby League and AFL, they only had AFL. A movie channel might workd although most of their channels atm are default movie channels as is. I would like to see a restructure of our channels to HD but that would take a lot of time and people having to buy new tv’s or set top boxes to get mpeg 4. Ideally their does need to be a change to mpeg 3 HD of the two out of 3 channels and the rest in SD or on chatch up services. Out of all of the Networks 7 is better prepared for a new Sport channel with the list of rights they already have but they will need enough of them to gain a big enough audience consistantly that…

  3. Surely this channel would not be HD first up, as the HD channel is going to be it’s main channel, so why would people want to watch a film in sd with ads and annoying watermarks??? I reckon they will do something similar to nine life, perhaps with lots of gordon ramsay etc on it?

      1. There is no “rule”, but it’s a reality.
        Due to bandwidth.

That’s why GEM went to SD, 7MATE & ABC24 will go to SD. ONE will most likely go to SD too once TEN gets around to it.

Think of bandwidth like a tube with water in it, you once you’re full, you’re full. HD channels use up a lot of bandwidth so you have like 2/3 (depending on bit-rate) SD channels to one HD channel.

  4. I don’t see an FTA movie channel being that successful. It’s much easier to get people to watch 30 min or 1hr shows, but to get the attention of enough people to watch enough 90-120mins is a big ask. They would also need to obtain a good back catalogue, because if we go by their current rotation of movies and bland midday movie selection, they’d be out of content within the first week.
It’s a shame Crawfords are so tight on their content with only DVD releases, I think there would be success with older Australian content.

  5. I’d like to see a Boxsets channel like the one on Foxtel that just plays Australian shows all day long. Seven definitely have enough content in their vault to do this.

  6. Fashion would be a good idea. If they had 24 hours of catwalk models walking up and down the runway it’d be something to watch during ad breaks on the other channels. Win/win situation.

    1. 24 hours of models wearing clothes from local retailers, and you might have yourself a viable channel. With Shazam integration and a dedicated app of course.

  7. Yes, yes, yes. They have a movie channel on freeview in the UK. People have been crying out for one for years. It will probably be the most popular multichannel going round if it happens.

  8. Who would be bothered with the never ending garbage, foisted on us by 7, even if it were a movie Chanel
Soul destroying idiot commercials every 5 or so minutes.
I haven’t watched 7 since their mind boggling arrogant coverage of the Olympic games all those years ago, where they were crucified for their idiot coverage of the games.
The way they treat their viewers is an absolute disgrace and, they should not be supported in any way.
When it comes to junk mail garbage tv, 7, you beat the lot, and, 7 is a very good reason, why viewers have left in droves and gone to VPN’s.
Some people have seen the final 6 episodes of Downton Abbey, minus the idiot and outrageous commercial breaks.

  9. Movies don’t rate any more. The content has to be cheap or sponsored. Travel; Real Estate; Gambling; Dating; Game Shows; World Sport; Music Videos? Your guess is as good as mine! It’s hard to keep a secret like this in the industry but no-one is willing to say.

    1. Please no gambling channel as it could breach the ACMA. Some of the shows would not be suitable for people under 15 years of age. I hate it when gambling ads kick into place as it annoys me and is a waste of time and money.

  10. This might do ok if they get the movies cheaply enough – so not recent releases. Some movies that have been broadcast many times still get fairly decent numbers of people watching them. I think that some people like that they can watch something for 2-3 hours in the evening and not have to worry about committing to a timeslot every week (especially when that timeslot changes anyway).

It only needs to pick up a couple of percent share on top of what it cannibalises to edge Seven ahead of Nine.

    1. The $ involved in stockpiling live sport didn’t equate to the channel share One was getting, so wasn’t value for money unfortunately. Was a great idea, think that it may still work. 7 have tied up AFL, swimming, golf, tennis, horse racing, NFL, various state Aussie Rules and rugby so they would have a reasonably strong starting point if they chose this route.

    2. One has ended its 24/7 sports channel in Apr 2011 where they want to focus on general programming like drama, documentary, comedy and movies. They have dropped One HD and rebranded it as ONE. However, they still telecasted live sport during that time. Their main aim is to compete against its rival channel 7mate.

      1. One ended it’s sports broadcasting because L Murdoch didn’t want it competing with Fox Sports Package. He wanted Ten to go back to targeting 16-34 with cheap content with One targeting older viewers. Was a disaster.

One was full of stuff that ESPN couldn’t be bothered broadcasting on ESPN Pacific and only had a 1.3% share of the FTA market. Though the costs were very low.

  11. All in glorious SD, no doubt. While I was in Turkey last year, I found it absolutely pathetic that a country where many cannot even afford to upgrade their old CRTs have more FTA HD channels than we do (and a decent selection of HD Pay TV channels), and at significantly better quality than what our networks are attempting to pass off as “HD”.

    We want quality not quantity.

  12. A movie channel would be okay (can always record and ad skip), probably more sensible than the foreign language channel Seven were talking about back in April last year. Plus if it is a movie channel that explains the quietness of it all, as they are likely buying up the rights to titles right now, where as a foreign language one they might be so quiet about.

  13. I just hope it’s not another 24 hour infomercial channel. There’s more than enough of that rubbish.
I also hope this isn’t another 9HD/9Life fiasco where anyone watching NBN or WIN can’t get it!
I assume PRIME will be carrying this?

  14. Movies is an interesting choice. At first I really liked it as its something different from the others. But saying that the problem with movies on tv is all the commercials it really drags it out if you’re watching it live.
