Today presenter Lisa Wilkinson and Palmer United founder Clive Palmer engaged in a robust interview this morning, both trying to get a word in during an interview about alleged misuse of funds at his Queensland Nickel business.

Palmer kept interrupting Wilkinson’s interrogation denying claims the company had donated $6 million to the Palmer United Party, prior to sacking of employees. Wilkinson, in turn, grilled him further on his claims during the 10 minute interview.

“I put it to you, Clive Palmer, that when your company was sinking, you used precious capital to keep it afloat at the ultimate expense of your workers,” Wilkinson said.

“Well that’s absolutely not true,” Palmer refuted.

Towards the end of the interview Wilkinson challenged Palmer on his political record.

“I’ve been criticised in the press, it’s a fabrication by the Murdoch press and media. It’s untrue.”

“Please Clive, I don’t work for Rupert Murdoch,” Wilkinson told him.

“Let me answer you your question, you will get a bonus from Rupert and the people who employ you,” he replied

“I don’t work for Rupert Murdoch.” Wilkinson said adding, “Australia thinks you’re a joke at the moment”.

“I don’t think they do,” Palmer said.

  1. Would she be doing that to the ALP or Greens? I wouldn’t think so as she would let them do whatever they want. As she is a lefty. Which isn’t a good look

  2. The fact that Palmer resorted to absurd paranoid murchoch-phobia under tough questioning from someone from the Nine Network just emphasizes that Palmer has nothing rational or constructive to contribute, his track record in business is now being closely examined by journalists from Fairfax News Limited and other commercial media companies and now finally by the ABC (after giving him a very soft run up to this year). If you solely relied upon the ABC for your news you would be quite surprised as to how much trouble the Palmer Group of companies and PUP Political party is in.

  3. We are slowly becoming americanised with this style of tv, with the aim more so being to make the news rather than actually resolve anything or get answers, Lisa just steam rolled him, not in the Jana Wendt classy way either, she came across as one of those ferals you sometimes see yelling to each other over train platforms

Not a great look at all

  4. I like Lisa & usually have no time for Clive but he was spot on about the Murdoch media. His papers are nothing but propaganda rags & if he has it in for someone they just make stuff up & print lies about them. Problem is Clive comes across as a buffoon & no one takes him seriously. Lisa kept asking him questions & kept cutting him off & not letting him answer the question.

  5. I have a question. What was the time difference between when the donation was made and the mine going into administration. The price of the mineral collapsed and the mine went into administration because the mine could not make money. If the donation was made some 6-12 months before the mine going into administration well…..It is his mine and his money. He can do with it whatever he wants.

    1. Multiple donations over a couple of years, with the last ~1/4 million in the 6 months before going into administration. Nickel prices have been trending downwards for the last 5 years, and at that time were the lowest they’d been since late 2013. They’re now 1/2 what they were then.

Yup, his mine & his money. The problem is he wanted everybody in Queensland to bail him out by covering loans for about the same amount Qld Nickel had donated to PUP during the time prices were falling.

  6. I’m seriously over these ubiquitous media power-couples: Lisa Wilkinson / Peter Fitzsimons; Sarah Ferguson / Tony Jones; Jessica Rowe / Peter Overton. And there are probably many more lurking out there in blather land!

      1. Totally agree with Andrew… Don’t really see your point??
Clive accused Lisa for working for Murdoch… However her husband Peter Fitzsimons writes for Fairfax….. Is that what you were trying to point out?

  7. We need more of this.
Lisa took Palmer apart and was clearly annoyed when he tried repeatedly to shift goalposts.
It was almost good journalism, and even Karl has shown he can do it in the past. Charlie Pickering and the rest of the Project cast have demonstrated that harder journalism is possible, and good for tv.

  8. I love Lisa but think she would be the first o complain is a male journo spoke to a female politician like that. I think both Today and Sunrise are just trying to get headlines and clicks these day.

  9. It was embarrassing to watch. Lisa just went at him hammer and tongs, just kept talking over him. I was surprised he didn’t do one of his famous walk offs. Hundreds of complaints on the Today facebook page about her.

    1. HeyJude: Are you joking Clive Palmer is no angel.
Sorry Lisa had every right to ask those questions.
Were did the money go??? Why are creditors after him.
I Like Clive. But he has lied to all of us .

      1. Off course she is there to ask questions but she needs to ask them and let them be answered. I can take or leave Clive Palmer, too many like him that get away with worse but that’s not the point. Too much seeking sensationalism for my liking.

    2. Embarrassing? What were you watching HeyJude? Palmer was the one who should be embarrassed and ashamed.
Proud of Lisa and the interview. Clive normally runs off… So it was nice to see someone asking the hard questions.

    3. That was more of an editorial by Lisa rather than an interview. A bit rude and amazed Clive put up with it. He handled it quite well considering. Poor uncontrolled performance by Lisa. I am no fan of Clive and Everybody wants to stick the knife in nut lets just think about the amount of people that can put Food on the table each night for there families because Clive has the balls to set up and run a business and employ thousands of people.
