MKR is the word on Tuesday

Ratings: A sensational US musical on Nine proved to be no match for Seven's local cooking show.

In the end Greased Lightning was no match for Greased Frying Pan….

My Kitchen Rules drew 1.53m viewers last night holding firm at #1 in the unofficial ratings war, and down slightly on its first outing.

It trumped I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here (828,000) and The Big Bang Theory (798,000) for the win.

Nine’s marathon broadcast of a sensational Grease: Live production from the US could only manage 452,000 viewers. It was another reminder that what trends on social media does not match the OzTAM panel -the show trended at #1 all night. NCIS on TEN also bettered it on 678,000.

Catalyst returned to 732,000 for ABC but Countdown to Life: The Extraordinary Making of You had to settle for a rather ordinary 477,000.

Seven won the night 31.3% then Nine 25.1%, TEN 20.1%, ABC 16.7% and SBS 6.8%.

  1. Grease Live was sensational – what a production. Very disappointed to see that it didn’t blitz the ratings as it clearly deserved to do. A Sat night time of 6.30pm would be perfect for the whole family to watch it – I hope Channel 9 re-screen this wonderful production & I hope local networks decided to put some money into doing some local versions instead of non stop reality!

    1. It was a bit of an ask expecting the audience to stay up till almost midnight on a Tuesday watching it. I know I only lasted until 10:30pm. 6:30pm Saturday would be the perfect time to rescreen it.

  2. An Australian musical unfortunately wouldn’t set the numbers alight. Shame it’s just we’re not a very musical or performance bunch here.
MKR is the same every year I finally switched off last year.

  3. Damn shame Grease reflected so badly.
But perhaps if it were given a Friday or Saturday family friendly timeslot it might have reached a much larger audience?
3.5 hours was a big ask.
Full length musicals (out of holiday season) just don’t cut it with the average public.
Still, I wonder what audience a “live event” Australian production (lots of camera angles from all parts of the theatre & inspired editing) would pull towards the end of a season? Something like Les Miz? BTW, congrats to Hayden Tee for taking his part to the Broadway revival.

  4. Would be interesting if one of the local networks took a risk and did something similar to Grease Live here in Australia with local talent, think it could be a ratings bonanza…

      1. Specially the first show, checking out the designated ‘baddie’ for the series. And boy, they’ve got a doozy this time, a truly awful woman. Mind you, if she survives, she’ll mellow as time goes on. This is how the scenario works, every time.

    1. He is playing a game. He was quoted as saying he was doing it to change the way people perceive him.

And after doing live cricket and commentary roles he knows he has to earn his $2M by eating all the grubs, doing more than he is asked, and never losing his cool.

Mind you he wouldn’t be where he is if people didn’t think he was a top bloke but the public just see him as a sex fiend.
