Don’t empty the sand from the hourglass just yet, Days of Our Lives has just been renewed for a 51st season.
The enduring daytime soap, which celebrated 50 years in November, will continue the Salem melodrama of the Bradys, Hortons and the DiMeras.
“NBC is incredibly proud of the legacy of Days of our Lives and we couldn’t be more excited to bring its fans new stories for the 51st season,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “In a business where having a show remain on the air for two seasons is considered a success, what Days has achieved is extraordinary.”
In the US the show still attracts 2.901 million viewers and airs in more than 25 countries internationally. In Australia the show ended a 45 year run on Nine in 2013, but now screens express from the US on Arena.
Steve Kent, senior executive VP of programming at Sony Pictures Television, added “Forty or fifty years ago, scenes went on for four or five minutes as the organ music was swelling. At the time it was compelling, that’s why it stayed on the air. But you have to keep evolving. That’s why we’re constantly updating.”

Funny. The head of NBC said around 2009 it may not be on air for much longer. Oh how times have changed. Now only NBC’s only daytime soap! I’m still not over Will Horton’s death!
I remember when I started my maternity leave for Baby No.1, every day I would get my 2 poached eggs on toast and my big glass of cold Milo (cravings) and sit and watch DOOL. That was 43.5 years ago. Vooooom…where did that go?
I’m happy about it, but not so happy with the storylines as too many characters are being killed off.
Fantastic news! I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I’d be lost without my daily Days fix.
