Guy Pearce, Rachel Griffiths join US gay rights drama.

Aussie stars join upcoming US drama that chronicles pioneers of the LGBT civil rights movement in the USA.

Guy Pearce and Rachel Griffiths have been case in upcoming US gay rights drama, When We Rise for the ABC network.

The series will chronicle the personal and political struggles, setbacks and triumphs of the LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the US civil rights movement.

Guy Pearce will star as LGBT activist Cleve Jones.

Rachel Griffiths will portray feature as social justice activist Diane, wife to women’s rights leader Roma Guy played by Mary-Louise Parker.

Also joining the cast are Austin McKenzie, Emily Skeggs, Jonathan Majors and Fiona Dourif. Still to be cast are African-American community organiser Ken Jones and transgender activist Cecelia Cheung.

When We Rise is written and created by Dustin Lance Black, who won an Oscar for penning the screenplay for Milk.

Gus Van Sant will direct the first two-hour series premiere of the seven-episode series.

  1. Great that these stories are finally being told & more GLBT characters are featured in movies/TV. But it all seems somewhat hypocritical to me, when are we going to see more GLBT actors/actresses been given major roles? I don’t think the acting world is yet in a place where people can be out & still get the same roles they would before coming out, at least not in Hollywood anyway.
