UK costume drama Dickensian was announced earlier this week as not receiving a renewal.

The 20-part series, based on the books of Charles Dickens, brought together characters from books such as Oliver Twist, Bleak House and Great Expectations.

Cast members included Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Rea, Peter Firth and Caroline Quentin.

A BBC spokeswoman said “We are incredibly proud of Dickensian and would like to thank all those involved in such an ambitious series.

“We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new shows and it won’t be returning for a second series.”

Writer Tony Jordan, noted that Dickens created in excess of 2,000 characters and he had only used 30 in the production so far.

“We are hugely proud of what we achieved in the first series of Dickensian and would like to thank everyone who helped us create a truly special and unique drama,” he said.

It aired in Australia on BBC First.

  1. Very disappointed to see this cancelled. I thought it was very respectful of the original texts whilst still telling essentially fresh stories. Well acted with reasonable production values. It is a pity that yet another drama falls by the wayside, probably to be replaced by a competition show of some description.
