Water damage hits ABC News studio in Melbourne

ABC News Melbourne and ABC News Breakfast productions get creative after studio water damage.

Water damage in ABC’s Southbank studio has impacted ABC News Melbourne and ABC News Breakfast productions.

Last night Melbourne viewers watched Perth-based newsreader James McHale present the 7pm News. McHale normally presents a national 5pm ABC News Early Edition bulletin on News 24. The time zone difference meant he could return to front one for Victoria, in place of Ian Henderson.

This morning ABC News Breakfast presenters Michael Rowland and Paul Kennedy were in Sydney, while Virginia Trioli remained in Melbourne, chatting with Shaun Micallef in the ABC foyer.

ABC’s Southbank studio has been undergoing an expansion for some time.

The mishap which led to water damage to several studios is expected to see interruptions for several days.

  1. Probably a good thing that some of the presenter got out to another city in Australia, over the last few months I have noticed that its starting to become very parochial and large slabs of the show should be called ABC Melbourne Breakfast rather than ABC News Breakfast! Just because the Westgate bridge has a traffic accident or a particular tram is not running on time does not mean that ABC viewers around the nation need to know (nor indeed care).

For such a large network they also have peculiar priorities and usually turn up too late to breaking news or interrupt regular programs far too early before the story arrives. For instance ABC WA viewers on Sunday morning also got the treat of their broadcast of Insiders being interrupted without warning by a 1hr ‘Live cross’ to Greg Jennet giving a running commentary on the rain outside the Governor General’s jet and footage of the PMs…
