Next week ABC marks NAIDOC Week, July 3 to July 10, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture, history and people.

ABC Managing Director, Michelle Guthrie, said, “NAIDOC Week is a chance for all Australians to celebrate the richness of our Indigenous cultures and history. It is a time to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, acknowledge their achievements and recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make.”

Compass: The Vic Simms Story
Bidgigal elder and singer Vic Simms shares his extraordinary story from early show business success, through personal struggles with crime and alcoholism, to then emerge on top as a respected musician and Aboriginal elder in Sydney’s La Perouse area.

Australian Story: David Batty
David Batty’s love for the bush and remote Australia has provided an array of great characters and a rich palette to ply his storytelling skills. Based in Alice Springs for 13 years, then Broome for 12 years and now living between his studio in Melbourne and his property on the South Coast of NSW, Batty has a long and distinguished history of making programs with and for Aboriginal people.

Over represented: A Vice Special on Indigenous Incarceration
Examines the over-representation of Indigenous Australians incarcerated in our prison system. Rapper and proud Yorta-Yorta man Briggs takes a look inside Reiby, a Juvenile Justice Centre on the outskirts of Sydney, to get an idea of what life is like as a young, Indigenous A-class offender.
