Film Victoria and the ABC have announced a new initiative to continue production in Victoria over the next two years.

The ABC Content Initiative will deliver an estimated $80 million in production expenditure in the state. An estimated 19 projects are expected to be supported, from production companies including December Media, Every Cloud Productions and Matchbox Pictures.

The announcement comes just 2 days after a Screen NSW initiative to boost production in NSW, and potentially “poach” interstate productions.

The first projects announced through the initiative are the fifth series of The Doctor Blake Mysteries and the recently announced eight-part drama series Newton’s Law.

The initiative will also feature professional development to ensure Victoria’s talented writers, directors and producers have the opportunities to enhance their skills.

Film Victoria CEO Jenni Tosi said, “This dedicated pipeline of activity will ensure our talented creative and crews can continue to excel in their craft, while Victorian companies are provided certainty to encourage ongoing investment in their businesses.”

ABC Director of Television Richard Finlayson added, “The Victorian Government has recognised the huge cultural and economic benefits that flow from supporting television production.

“In recent years it has positioned the state as the home of Australian drama in particular. The ABC, and most importantly our audience, is enormously grateful for its commitment.”

Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley said, “Victoria is playing a strong role in ensuring we see more rich and diverse Australian content.”

“This is the next step in recognising the contribution creative industries make to our state, and the artistic, cultural, social and economic benefits of our strong screen sector.”
