UPDATE: Nine, Southern Cross, WIN, TEN: affiliate changes

Southern Cross has released further detail on its upcoming suite of channels from July 1st, following changes to affiliate deals.

Brian Gallagher, Chief Sales Officer for SCA said “We cannot wait for 1 July. The new affiliation gives us the opportunity to offer our clients even greater opportunities to reach a bigger audience than ever before. Our sales team are out talking to our clients explaining the changes and getting everyone ready for the change on 1 July.”

In the key markets of regional Queensland, Southern NSW and regional Victoria, from Friday 1 July, Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) will broadcast the Nine Network channels.

After recently signing a new five year affiliation agreement with the Nine Entertainment Co. popular Channel Nine programs such as The Voice, the NRL State of Origin, Love Child, The Briefcase, A Current Affair, 60 Minutes and Today, will be broadcast by SCA on channels 5, 50-54 on viewers remote controls.

Ten Network shows will be on WIN from 1 July.

In the key market of Northern NSW (where Nine owns a licence through NBN) SCA has renewed its affiliation agreement with the TEN Network and will continue to broadcast TEN Network programming. The Northern NSW licence area includes the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and Tamworth. Unchanged, SCA will continue as before to sell these TEN programs to its national and local clients.

    1. Not sure they know themselves. Page 3 of the link PDF in the above claims “Tamworth/Taree WIN (9, GEM, GO)”. Sorry guys, that’s NBN territory, never has been WIN, will not be WIN. Nothing changes.
@effdee – No, the numbers will change. According to the PDF in the link “From July 1 2016 SCA will broadcast Nine Network Channels found on 5, 50, 51, 52, 53, and 54 on remote control”. Not on 8, 80, 81 etc. as now. 9Life ? Possibly not as not mentioned anywhere. Cue uproar from the regions.

        1. Also from the mentioned link –
          Will I still get 9Gem, 9Go! and 9Life?
9Gem will be on channel 52 from July 1.
9GO! will be on channel 53 from July 1.
Southern Cross Austereo has ordered and awaiting delivery of the equipment to be able to broadcast 9Life. SCA is expecting that it will be broadcasting 9Life by mid-August.

Confusing advice all over that site.

    2. Go to the nineon5.com.au website click on FAQ and it advises that the equipment to broadcast 9HD and 9LIfe is on order from Europe and they expect to be broadcasting both by mid August. So there will be a few weeks without either.

  1. So, regardless of who broadcasts what channel, do the channel numbers change?
If not, I don’t care, as long as I can continue to see the channels I watch on the same numbers!

      1. no they wont… WIN retains 8 80 81 and so on, they will show channel 10 and so on… SCA (soon to be Channel 9 branded) will be 5 50 51 52 and so on…. SCA wont show 9HD until at least September…. meaning regionals will watch 3rd state of origin in SD….

        1. Yes they will. Channel 5 will be 9, 50 9HD, 52 9Gem, 53 9Go, 54 9Life
Channel 8 will still be Win (Now 10), Eleven, One and TVSN (?) will be in the 80s.

        2. SCA’s channel 50 (currently running ONE) is already high def. If they put 9HD on it, why would they need new equipment from overseas? And why do they need new equipment to carry 9Life? Surely a straight re-transmission from Channel 94. But what would I know.

          1. Because One is an MPEG-2 stream while 9HD is MPEG-4. Presumably SCA’s existing equipment is not MPEG-4 capable.

If you’re confused now, wait until we switch to the DVB-T2 broadcast standard and have to buy new TVs again.

          2. GRM, at the moment ONE is actually just one statewide stream, whilst to get the 9HD (and in NNSW SCTEN HD) channels it would need to be simulcast with SD, which means different feeds for different areas – so more equipment would be needed to have local ads etc for different regions.

  2. SCA channels with Nine content will be 5/50/51/52/53/54. So Channel 55 which currently carries Eleven will disappear? It will be one of WIN’s channels, most likely 82?
Hey, the morning of July 1st will be spent flicking channels to see what’s what, here in regional Qld!

  3. “popular Channel Nine programs such as …. The Briefcase”. What’s that? How can it be called “popular” when it hasn’t started yet?
How does “The new affiliation gives us the opportunity to offer our clients even greater opportunities to reach a bigger audience than ever before” work? They’re not adding any new transmitters anywhere are they?

      1. Exactly. And WIN’s audience will plummet. Who would watch repeats of ‘Bold and Beautiful’ at 7.00 am in preference to “Today”? Regional folk will simply continue to watch what they have always watched, irrespective of the channel number.

  4. Thanks for passing that on DK. Its a nice, clear and concise update from Nine as to what’s happening. Now hopefully they sort out some of the affiliations (Tassie and TDT for eg) before July 1.

  5. Both SCA and WIN have begun to broadcast their new affiliations. SCA have to add new channels to their current offerings. This is going to confuse many viewers that’s for sure.
