ABC has been busy transforming its Ultimo foyer for Election night.

For ABC’s broadcast, graphics will hang off walls and balconies, float in mid-air and ‘grow’ out of the floor.

“The foyer isn’t a natural location for a television event.  There’s no lighting grid, the power’s inadequate, patch panels are scarce and it’s a public space,” producer Eric Napper wrote on Tumblr.

“In the final week of the campaign, we are gradually, then suddenly, taking it over to set up a giant screen, run cables for television and IT and build up our staging.  The Ultimo property team has been a wonderful partner in making all this happen.

“It seems, though, that everyone (from the Managing Director down) wants to know if the audio will be OK.  I’ve promised everyone that it’ll be fine.

“Election night is a big deal, so it’s a brilliant opportunity to showcase what the ABC can do, not just against the standards of our competition, but against the best work we’ve ever done up to this point. We strive to exceed those standards in every aspect of the production.”

Meanwhile Seven’s graphics team have devised a Departure Lounge to eject losing politicians and a Tower of Power to illustrate who is leading at any given point. While Nine be having its Shredder or Shark Pool this year?

Oh, FFS! The next time some stuck-up talking head complains about how poorly-informed, uninterested, disengaged, and shallow-thinking the average voter is I’ll just point and say “and who’s fault is that?”

And I bet yet again they’ll wonder why the ABC’s election-night coverage smacks them in the ratings…
