Potential departure for Footy Show sponsor worth $2m

If Nissan walks from its AFL Footy Show deal, it would impact the NRL Footy Show sponsorship too.

Nissan’s rumoured departure as a sponsor of the AFL Footy Show at the end of the season could be worth $2m in revenue to Nine.

The car company is yet to confirm reports it will walk away from a deal, following recent comments by Sam Newman.

Media giant Carat tells Fairfax any exit would also include the end of sponsorship for the NRL Footy Show too.

“They are not individual deals,” an unnamed Carat insider said. “It’s a combined advertising buy of $2 million a year across the interstate markets. Conceivably, Nissan could stop sponsoring one [show] and not the other, but that is not how the deal has worked in the past.”

Last month Newman directed comments at Nine colleague Caroline Wilson, and dissed “second-tier media outlets” as excrement.

GTV9 Managing Director Ian Paterson has said “I’m not going to specifically address any of Sam’s comments but I can confirm that we’re completely supportive of him as we are Caroline Wilson.”

  1. Perhaps Nissan should send the money back to where it came from: it’s customers, $25 a vehicle will buy half a tank of fuel or a couple of wiper blades. Ethically, a Nissan “Biffo” Ward in a sporting injury clinic would be better but when did ethics and business mix? As viewers we should hope that the money stays with FTA.

  2. I loved the show when it started, I even went to live tapings, but it’s been a long time since I’ve watched. Like any long-running show they became parodies of themselves, exaggerating what they thought the audience wanted to the point of offensiveness and imbecility. I was interested when Rebecca started but when I switched across to check it out I copped some absolute crap from Sam and thought ‘yeah nah’. I’d be interested in a total host reinvention like Top Gear (and the return of a genuine comedian like Trevor, not a bunch of ex-players who think they are hilarious), but that’ll never happen. I’ll stick with Footy Classified – some boofhead crap there too but a much better balance.

  3. channel 9 has a lot of history in its programs whether its 60 minutes or the footy show, but I am wondering if its time both shows either get the boot or get a reboot with new cast members. Sam Newman is as relevant is football as Tara Brown is in news.

    1. I’m old enough to remember when 60 Minutes was 60 minutes (well, “48 minutes of bull**** & 12 minutes of commercials”, as Mr. Tayshus said) of in-depth world & local current affairs, and the [NRL] Footy Show was a show about football (well, maybe not, but it at least dissected a game or two between blackface, cross-dressing, & ‘football to the groin’ skits).

I’m just glad I’m not as old and tired as the shows are…

Pretty much says it all. When Nine has “boned” employees for far less. Pathetic. Ah, $$$$$$$$$$.

I hope Paterson is in the Australian Olympics Team. If he can hold the position stated above, then the gold medal for contortionists is his.

  6. Is this the real reason The NRL Footy Show is still on air? The mighty sponsorship dollar? Because it’s ratings gave been dreadful lately. Sadly, the show isn’t as good as it once used to be.
