60 Minutes bites back over claims Kerry Packer would be “turning in his grave”
"Come on Jed. Get your head out of the sand!" a riled Peter Overton told a viewer.

As I am on Hiatus I missed this very peculiar moment from 60 Minutes on the weekend, when Peter Overton hit back at a Facebook suggestion by viewer Jed Duncan that the show would have Kerry Packer “turning in his grave.”
The comment followed a story on US parents deciding they no longer want their adopted child, and advertising them to prospective new parents online.
But Peter Overton was having none of the criticism.
“Come on Jed. Get your head out of the sand! Of course it’s happening. By the way Kerry Packer championed this programme, and I have no doubt he would have seen this as the legitimate story it is,” he said.
While it’s good that a show is airing criticism, you have to wonder what 60 Minutes was trying to achieve by lambasting a viewer.
Jed’s view that the show has lost some of its gloss is undoubtedly not confined to a single story and that Mr. Packer would indeed be unimpressed with standards of late.
Or perhaps I have my head in said sand…

After Peter Overton made that statement he threw to a 6 minute preview of a story no-one outside of Sydney would know or care about. They’ve totally lost the plot.
6 minute preview?! Not sure which program you were watching buddy. IIRC it was less than 1 minute…
Found that a bit strange too, and then he used that to seg into promo for next week on a story that you would find on ACA.
I Still watch 60 minutes on Sunday night.
60 Minutes is longer a must-see program for me. I will probably catch up on most of the years stories in the summer repeats.
Apparently 60 Minutes have employed a gravedigger – sorry, body recovery expert – to check on Kerry’s rotational state, just in case.
If Kerry Packer saw the mess that 60 Minutes has turned into this year he would have done an ‘Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos’ on it.
Kerry packer wouldn’t recognise Ch.9 today, never mind 60 Minutes.
Peter Harvey (Canberra) used to be quite aggressive/rude with his mailbag segment.
This is just the evolution of the ‘mailbag’ segment. People’s views were aired and commented on before. The ways in which people express their views has changed. Before, people had to get out the pen and paper to write praise or criticism, now it’s just a few taps into their palm – with little or no forethought as there once was. Good on 60 Minutes for having a go back, people believe their opinions are so valid now because they have a platform. If they want to put their views out there – they should definitely accept that it will be given equal right of reply.
