Spoilers ahead….

Outlander showrunner Ronald D. Moore has dropped some major hints about the upcoming third season.

“I don’t think I’m giving too much away,” he told an audience at the Edinburgh Intl. Television Festival, “but the story of season 3 will start in Scotland. Then there’s a sea voyage involved in the 18th century, an extended journey across the Atlantic, and then the story goes to Jamaica and the Caribbean and ending up in the New World.

“Normally by the third and fourth season of a show it’s basically a machine – this is the police station, this is an apartment, this is the bridge of the Enterprise – you’re familiar with using those sets. But with this it’s like you’re doing a whole new series every year.

“It’s exciting creatively; it’s very hard in terms of the production… You are doing a whole new series with every season. So that’s very difficult. Scouting new locations, building new sets, bringing in new cast members, new costumes, different eras. It increases the expense, it increases the time necessary to prep everything, to shoot everything… So it makes it more difficult and it also takes more mental energy having to crack new problems.

“As different as season two was from season one, season three will be again from season two.”

Outlander returns in 2017.

  1. Nothing new here, as all those locations are part of the third book. It will be interesting to see how they manage this season, as there is a lot more content to be covered. Hopefully there will be more episodes, to make sure that they don’t leave anything out.
