The Checkout: Aug 4

Too many wine awards on labels? ABC gets to the bottom of the very big business of Wine Awards.

2016-08-02_1148

On The Checkout this week:

  • Kirsten Drysdale shows why wine awards don’t sit well. How is it that so many wines have medals on the labels? It turns out you get what you pay for.. the Wine Awards are big business.
  • Julian Morrow explains why pharmacies get his goat, and asks why they are selling so many scientifically dubious products when their Code of Conduct says they should work on the bases of “accepted evidence”.
  • And The Checkout’s elite unit of scam detectors – the ACCC CCC – investigates the scammers who pretend to be Centrelink (or other government departments) in order to rip people off.

8pm Thursday on ABC

  1. Love this show and glad to have it back. However as someone who works for a major Internet Service Provider, last week’s piece on speeds I felt had none of the sharpness or real insight I’ve come to expect. They were right – customers generally have no idea about internet speeds and how they work – but I felt the ISPs didn’t so much get off lightly, they dodged a bullet altogether with a shallow fluff piece.
