ABC2 will air a UK doco Airbnb: Dream or Nightmare? which looks at the phenomenon of the San Fransisco-based online accommodation portal, and includes horror stories experienced by some property owners.

Answer? Dream.

Last year some 80,000 people in the UK listed their property on room bookings site Airbnb and London has become one of its fastest growing markets. While the majority of its millions of users have positive experiences, Airbnb: Dream or Nightmare? also reveals what can go wrong when you open up your cherished house to strangers or book to stay with someone you’ve never met – from houses ruined by out of control parties to prize possessions being stolen, hosts whose behaviour is completely inappropriate to accommodation that is double-booked, dirty and in some cases dangerous.

  1. II am 62 years of age & have considerable experience both as a renter and as an accommodation provider. I also knew a woman in Newcastle who has owned two blocks of apartments for decades who is a bit older than me. Believe me the airbnb system is the best I have come across. You can see a bit about who you are getting if you are a host and guests can leave feedback if they get bad treatment. As a host, my Magnetic Island two bedroom apartment has attracted some really lovely people. It was a far better experience than all previous ones providing accommodation. As for the the lady in Newcastle with the two apartment blocks, she quite regularly told me one of her apartments got trashed – about a once a year event. The two houses on either side of me are rentals. I have watched over the last year and a half and the two ex-tenants left them pretty wrecked. Both house had to be completely…
