The BBC is considering launching a rival show to The Great British Bake Off with three of its original presenters, Mary Berry, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.

All three have vowed to remain with the BBC after the hit series moves to Channel 4 with one original member, Paul Hollywood, who has signed a three-year deal, said to be worth around £1 million ($AU1.7m). Hollywood’s BBC contract was said to be worth around £75,000 a series ($AU125,000), with the baker thought to have quadrupled that deal to move to Channel 4.

According to the Telegraph, the BBC is understood to have told Mary Berry, 81, that she will be placed at the heart of the corporation’s cookery line-up and will be styled as the broadcaster’s number one television chef until she chooses to retire.

Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s director of content, said there were plans to “cook up more unmissable shows with [Berry] in the future”.

  1. Quite amazing to think that Channel 4 has handed over millions to get the show without ensuring that the talent was part of the deal. Or was this just a very expensive exercise in nobbling one of BBC’s biggest hits.

  2. When you hear things about the pay differentials between commercial and public broadcast TV, its commendable the loyalty that a lot of the staff and talent have to the BBC and ABC.

    1. So true,
I’ve found that with respect to those in ABCs news department.
Imagine the kind of money Sarah Ferguson could be earning on either 60 mins or Sunday Night.

      1. I have trouble imagining a world in which Sarah Ferguson would willingly choose to work for either of those programs.

Producer: Would you like a free trip to Lebanon, Sarah?
Ferguson: Has this been vetted by Legal and okayed by upstairs?
Producer: I’m sure it’ll be fine. Probably.
        Ferguson: I’ll pack my bags.
