“Do you think I’m equal to you?”

Q&A frequently discusses Marriage Equality, but Magda Szubanski made it personal.

A debate about Marriage Equality is nothing new for Q&A but last night television personality Magda made it personal, when she asked Deputy Nationals leader Fiona Nash “Do you think I’m equal to you?”

“Of course I do,” Nash replied.

“If I was your daughter, and being gay, would you think I should have the right to be married?” Szubanski continued.

Nash told her, “I’ve been asked this question a lot over the last 12 months and my response was that my view is still the traditional view of marriage. I love my children regardless of what they ever brought home for me would make absolutely no difference at all. I completely respect your view and your desire to see that as equality.”

“But you won’t give me my rights?”

For Szubanski, who came out publicly in 2012, the answer wasn’t enough.

“Thanks for nothing.”

  1. For a government that prides itself on being economically responsible and staying out of peoples lives, it is crazy to spend 160 mill on a plebiscite. We all know that gay marriage is coming so why put the country through this. Get all the pollsters to do an opinion poll and average it out. We all know that pollies do react to opinion polls.

    1. There is a very vocal element who would like people to believe that “we all know…”. The harassment of people like Ms Nash means that most people who agree with her no longer express their view out loud. The plebiscite is absolutely necessary, to distinguish between real opinion and what vested interests are trying to present as an inevitibility.

      1. What rubbish. We are talking about oppression here and basic human rights. It is not harassment of Ms Nash. She is not the victim here.Ms Nash and others are trying to dictate to a minority group how to live their lives.

        1. Rubbish Fiona. If you want to know what harassment looks like, walk in some of our shoes for a few decades, and see how you like being bashed, spat at, ridiculed in public, and unjustly arrested and bashed by police for daring to be gay.

  2. Jason, why is Nash inflicting her view on others? I also respect Magda’s views, but do we tell Magda to keep her views to herself and not ‘inflict’ them on others? I have no problem with gay marriage, but everyone is entitled to have a mature discussion about it and not be labelled anti-gay or whatever, because they still hold the traditional view of marriage.

    1. Care to outline what you mean by “traditional”. Do you mean marriage as a tool to gain more power or land as was done by royalty? Do you mean the “bride” must wear white (not to display her virginity – as people yet again believe incorrectly, but to show how wealthy she is).
The fact is that “traditional” marriage, as you incorrectly use the term, is a relatively recent phenomenon, taken over the history of the human race. Marriage traditions have changed many times throughout history and this will simply be a step forwards again 🙂

  3. I can’t believe that in 2016, we are still debating this topic. Once dubbed “The Lucky Country”, we are now so backward in this area. Australia is so far behind the rest of the world. It is embarrassing.

  4. Nash, I respect your personal views but keep them to yourself and don’t try to inflict them on others. As for the plebiscite, save a few hundred million $ and have ReachTel conduct a phone poll. One question, three answers, Yes/No/No Opinion. Cost under $10K. Predicted the last election to less than 1% variation. A poll, those things that politicians live and die by, and cause Prime Ministers to be overthrown. That is, of course, if we have to have any type of survey at all.

  5. The plebesite debate is starting to wear me out. I’ve never felt second class for being gay, but the continued discussion/justification is now moving into such personal space its having an effect.

Can’t imagine what it’s doing to closeted teens if its starting to mess with a 40-year-old’s headspace.

    1. Yes. Not going to be an easy few months for families and schools as we do our best to keep people calm and safe.

Just remember that are many more non-bigots out there supporting yourselves and others. If the polls are anything to go by, the ratio is about 2:1. If the one nation vote is anything to go by, it’s about 19:1. And they are becoming more of a minority every day.
