Karl on Brangelina split: “Nobody’s business”

You would think somebody other than Karl Stefanovic would have been a better choice to face this Mixed Grill topic.

Media are all agog at reports Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt but you would think somebody might have suggested anyone other than Karl Stefanovic host this “Mixed Grill” segment on Today.

It was an unavoidable topic for morning TV this morning.

As has been reported elsewhere this week, Stefanovic is himself dealing with personal issues with wife, Cassandra.

“It is a big media story, you can argue it’s no one’s business what’s going on inside there,” Stefanovic said today.

“They’re high profile, it’s a tough one.”

Morning television regularly discusses celebrity lives, from dating rumours, to new babies and marriage splits. That made the ‘Brangelina’ split particularly untimely for Stefanovic, but who would have doubtless come into question had he not weighed in too.

This week media have snapped paparazzo photos of Stefanovic, who is ‘fair game’ but unkindly snapped photos of his wife, who is clearly no celebrity.

Earlier this week Nine said it would not comment on the personal lives of its talent.

  1. Was disappointed to see that even the ABC thought that this “news” was worth including in their 7pm bulletin. And not just a passing mention – two whole minutes including commentary from someone at a gossip mag. Really banal.

    I repeat by earlier observation from below – “… this dumbing down trend is not confined to commercial breakfast TV”.

I couldn’t believe what I was watching this morning when Sunrise phoned a cash cow entrant, got the answering machine, and Sam said something along the lines of, “This is Sunrise Cash cow calling, but you didn’t answer, so you miss out “. How heartbreaking for the entrant. They should have just hung up, and the entrant would probably never have known.

  3. Meanwhile Sunrise made fun of it with Eddie showing me memes featuring Jennifer Aniston. Shows the difference in the shows. Today still shows the news, Sunrise dumbs it down.

    2. Yes, I thought that the other day when we heard that the Sound of Music actress had passed away. They were laughing and bantering! I thought they were fans of the movie and thought they’d show some respect. The Today Show handled it much more respectfully.

  5. When your put yourself in the public eye and you have the fame and wealth that goes with that your going to be spoken about whether its good or bad. You can debate how right or wrong or fair that is but that’s just how it works.

  6. This trend toward more celebrity news on these shows drove me to ABC breakfast. They have a bit but not to the extremes of Today and the rest of them. These shows are getting dumber. A bit hypocritical to not report on karls split when they do on everyone elses

    1. Agree. However, this dumbing down trend is not confined to commercial breakfast TV. It’s happening with all of the “news” and caff programs on TV, same with online news services.

      Don’t click the “more videos” link (or any link to the dailymail) because your IQ will be decreased by 10 points just from the thumbnails.
