New US drama Designated Survivor, in which Kiefer Sutherland is appointed US president following an attack on the Capitol, has won a full season by ABC.

The series is currently being fast-tracked to Australia on Netflix with a new episode each week.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, in its first week Designated Survivor posted the best Live+3Day lifts of any new show since Empire in early 2015. The pilot has climbed to 15.3 million total viewers.

ABC also gave another new drama, Speechless, a full season -an Australian broadcaster is yet to be confirmed.

Designated Survivor and Speechless are two of the most critically acclaimed new shows of the fall season,” said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey. “We’re very proud of the creative excellence in front of and behind the camera, and are thrilled to be giving our audience more episodes.”

  1. Wait, what? They’re filming this show week by week? I don’t understand the first paragraph, they got a full season? It’s a great show, a bit American cheese but hope the series gets better!

    1. Most shows initially get 13 episodes to start off with, then based on how they go in the ratings, they get another 9 episodes known as the ‘back 9’. This is what’s known as a full season.
