Freeview has confirmed it will launch a mobile app with Live streaming and Catch-up services from all Free to Air networks in November.

The world-first mobile app, branded Freeview FV, will include:

  • Live-streaming from all the free-to-air networks
  • Access to all catch-up TV
  • Browse and search
  • A free-to-air TV guide
  • Recommendations

The service will be available to all Australians through their mobile devices and measured through OzTAM’s video play measurement.

The announcement follows from Freeview’s pledge some years ago to offer a universal catch-up service.

Freeview CEO Liz Ross said: “For the first time globally, an FTA industry has united to create and deliver a powerful consumer experience. Freeview FV will deliver fantastic choice and convenience in one place, it is simple and-easy to-use, and it will meet the needs of audiences wherever they may be.

“From live streaming news and current affairs during the morning commute to catching-up on a favourite TV program on the way home, Freeview FV will completely revolutionise access to the free-to-air TV offering in Australia.”

  1. I won’t bother with this. For one I don’t have enough space on my mobile for another app. I also only watch catchup tv as a last resort as I hate all the ads they have. It’s so annoying. I don’t mind at the start, but I don’t need a commercial break during a show, that’s what the pause button is for!

    1. Commercial breaks during the show is how the content is brought to you for free.

If 7, 9 or 10 introduced an $10 a month charge for a ad-free catch up TV service, would you pay for it?

  2. If it has Chromecast support, then I’ll give it a go, otherwise I’ll stick to the network owned apps. Its’ annoying that Plus7 and Tenplay apps don’t have Chromecast support, only ABC, SBS and Nine. If Nine can do it and they don’t even have content worth watching, surely 7 and 10 can lift their game.

    1. That’s your opinion, I find plenty to watch on 9. (but I also watch 7 & 10 as well)

They were the first to bring a lot of pay TV content to free to air and now 7 and 10 have started doing it as well.

9 were also the first to start streaming in HD (both catch up and live is in HD now) and the first to do chromecast.

  3. Vague on information. Would you need to create an account to access the app? That would be annoying. Do they have catch up within the app or is it just a link to the separate catch up sites for each network? Will there be differences in what’s available in the app and what’s available on say a desktop site? For some catch up services the desktop site supports more shows then then app version or for one catch up service apps on some devices offer more shows the the same app on others. Some free to air channels only offer limited live streaming. Will that be changing within the app or is it just a reflection of existing services? What devices will they be supporting? Will they make a windows app?

  4. This is a good move and I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

Can it please have offline downloads?

However, I’m sorry Ms/Mrs Ross but this is not the first time globally this has been done LOL

The US have had a universal catch up service (hulu) for years and the UK have had tvcatchup.com and associated apps for several years as well.

    1. Hulu doesn’t have all of the US FTA networks on it (CBS is missing), and TVCatchUp was a private company not an industry initiative (plus it’s been in liquidation for over a year its a miracle its even still online).

  5. Any word if the live stream will be for the viewers local region, so will it just be the feed that the current website offers? (which for ABC is Sydney based)
