Struggle Street producers will challenge a $609 fine issued by Brisbane City Council.

Keo Films were fined two weeks ago after filming in Skylark Street, Inala.

Brisbane City Council has refused all permit requests to film on public property and without permits, crews and transport will need to be nimble and legal in parking. But that doesn’t prevent them filming on private property.

An SBS spokeswoman said: “The infringement notice issued to Struggle Street producers Keo Films appears to have been issued on no legal basis and will be contested.”

“Keo Films continues to comply with regulations for filming in a public place in Australia to make this documentary, which is fundamentally about giving people and communities the chance to share their stories of hardship, overcoming adversity and community spirit.

“It’s disappointing to see detractors going to great lengths to discourage people from sharing those stories and now council appears to be using its influence to effectively block people from having their voices heard.”

But in a letter to Council, Keo claimed filming did not involve any parks, malls, roads or council property.

“Accordingly, our position is that there is no requirement for Keo to have obtained any consent, and so the failure to do so would not result in a punishable offence under the Local Law,” they claimed.

Filming for the second season is also taking place in Sunshine in western Melbourne.

  1. “When a fee is charged, the fee is $662.95 (including GST) in 2016-17 financial year”. (BCC).
So the fine was less, $609? Could be. This is a council after all.
