Tour Down Under 2017: guide

Nine's coverage of Adelaide's premium cycling event begins on Sunday January 8th.

Adelaide will again play host to the Tour Down Under screening across Nine and GEM, with commentary led by Phil Liggett.

The seven day event will include Tour de France stage winner and current UCI World Road Champion, Slovakian Peter Sagan.

“Returning, after seven years, to the race that set off my professional career is a great feeling and I look forward to riding on the roads of Adelaide and South Australia,” said Peter Sagan “This iconic Australian race brings the world’s best riders on a course that features tough climbs and fast sprints and I’m convinced its 19th edition could be the best so far.”

Adding to the star power, and making his TDU debut after a great season, winning the Italian monument Giro di Lombardia, is Colombian cycling superstar, Esteban Chaves.

Legendary cycling commentator, Phil Liggett will provide wheel to wheel coverage, calling all the action once again with his long-time commentary partner Paul Sherwen. The broadcast veterans will also be joined by cycling legend, the most coveted former Australian sprinter, Robbie McEwen.

Two-time Olympic champion, five-time Olympic medalist, and Cycling’s Golden Girl, Anna Meares also joins the team in her role as Santos Tour Down Under ambassador. 

Coverage of the opening round of the UCI WorldTour will commence with the People’s Choice Classic on Sunday, January 15, followed by Stages 1-6 of the Santos Tour Down Under from Tuesday, January 17.

Cycling fans will see all the drama unfold live exclusively on Nine and 9Gem as some of cycling’s biggest names race through the streets of Adelaide. Broadcasting the event for the sixth time,The Nine Network, will present 30 hours of Santos Tour Down Under coverage including a one hour Santos Women’s Tour highlights show, showcasing the thrilling final three hours of each of the first four stages Live on Nine and 9Gem.

Leading up to what is sure to be a nail biting finale of cycling, the entire final two stages of the 2017 Santos Tour Down Under will be broadcast Live on Nine on Saturday, January 21, from 11.30am AEDT and on 9Gem Sunday, January 22, from 1.30pm.

Deemed the biggest cycling race in the Southern Hemisphere, the world renowned Santos Tour Down Under will also be covered in Nine News updates, as well as regular reports on the Today Show and Weekend Today Show.

Today Show Sports presenter Tim Gilbert will host the 2017 Santos Tour Down Under for 9Gem and the Nine Network while his Wide World of Sports co-host, Olympian John Steffensen, will bring viewers “fan cam” with all the endless excitement and colour that makes the Santos Tour Down Under much more than a bike race.

The Wide World of Sports website will provide complementary coverage of the 2017 Santos Tour Down Under, featuring live streaming from each stage, video highlights, interviews and features, the latest news and results, expert opinion and photo galleries from the race.
