‘Whitejacketgate’ is over. Move on.

Woman's mags go below the belt in a shameless bid to milk a story that ended 2 weeks ago.

New Idea magazine has unfairly taken aim at Nine News Now presenter Amber Sherlock long after the video of “whitejacketgate” went viral.

It quotes unnamed sources that rip into her character which, arguably continue a bullying line at a time when presenters are calling out women’s magazines for trading in gossip.

It speculates on all kinds of newsroom rivalry (which I will spare you given nobody has bothered to put their name to it) but even descends to lines like, “Everyone talks about how awful she is to work with.”

Come on….

If articles want to criticise her tone in the leaked video (and even I did that) then fair enough. That’s a criticism of an on-the-record performance.

But play the ball, not the (wo)man. This is clearly a cover story to sell magazines after seeing how much public interest there was in the story.

I have no doubt Sherlock learned a hard lesson from the incident, but the continued and disproportionate coverage is unhelpful and ironic, given much of the criticism discussed bullying in the workplace. What the magazines print actually gets approved by a number of people.

The criticisms from the Pacific Magazines publication -owned by Seven West Media- were also republished by Yahoo7! just days after Sunrise presenter Sam Armytage lashed out at Bauer Magazine’s Woman’s Day.

“Silly. Trash. Idiotic. Mindless. Bullshit,” she wrote on Instagram.

What went down was an on-air spat. Yes it was a merciless peeling back of the curtain and we all watched it more than once to considerable delight.

But apart from a few bruised egos nobody was hurt. There was no violence, no need to press charges. It can be sorted between employer and employee, with a few more checks and balances in place.

Nobody involved deserves media articles suggesting they are “awful to work with,” any more than a magazine journo would like to see printed about themselves. Someone probably owes her an apology for going there and not realising the story is over.

  1. Being totally oblivious to all the trashy tabloids, I had no idea that they were still pursuing this “story”, or what they were writing….until your article. You just gave them a new voice to a new audience. Oh the irony.

  2. The story is channel nine needs to grow a pair! They have a corporate responsibility that just shows the rest of Australia they are no longer responsible. The rest is puff pieces.

  3. Must be a quiet week. I guess with Bec not at the tennis anymore they can’t write about her. On another note I just saw a tweet from Sam Armytage saying she just got papped picking up dog poo at the park. Seriously do these people have nothing better to do?

  4. She was nasty and rude to her colleague- (I would never speak to anyone like that regardless) if she had said sorry and explained herself this would’ve been done and dusted, I actually don’t watch ch9 news anymore I go to 7 or 10 or online.

    1. Why does she have to say sorry for a video that was leaked and not meant for public eyes? As long as she has made up with Julie Snook that’s all that really matters right.
Not really a reason to stop watching a news program that is on during the day, that hardly anyone watches anyway. Guessing you weren’t really a 9 viewer anyway. Everyone has their allegiance

      1. Leaked or not the public has seen it and as a good media/tv personality you should try to clear your name or make an acceptable statement etc and allow the public to know who you really are- look at the attention it’s caused it wasn’t handled correctly.. regardless if they’ve made up- that’s what I’m saying! Also never said I watched a news program during the day? she presents the weather on 9news am a viewer here and there though now I tune right out!! ?

        1. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
As David said there were statements made at the time on their own website. I don’t see that as being handled incorrectly. Storm in a teacup. Nothing more was needed.

You switch channels because of a weather presenter who is on screen for 5mins of a 60min show and just reads temperatures. That’s funny. Must be the reason I don’t watch sunrise, can’t stand the cash cow…. gets my goat.

** don’t actually watch any breakfast TV btw I have a job
