Newsflash…. reality participant whinges about selective editing (again).

It's tough to discover you're a Reality TV villain, thanks to the skill of editors.

Another day, another reality TV star isn’t happy about their depiction on air.

Anthony Manton told his colleagues that Nine’s Married at First Sight was guilty of portraying him as a TV villain.

“I’ll give you an example — last night’s episode we had homestays and Nadia and myself spent four days in my apartment in Sydney,” he said.

“We went to the races in that time, we had dinner with friends and family during that time, we cooked for each other, we had some great moments — and what do they play? Me blowing up about my Wi-Fi connection.

“In four days that’s all they play, a 30 second clip. That’s a great example of how heavily edited these shows are.”

Who knew?

Manton, who works as a Racing Broadcaster & TV Presenter, might have had some insight into the genre’s manipulation before signing up. But he maintains it was his desire to find a partner that drove his inclusion.

“That was my biggest motivation in going on the show, and I put my faith in the experts because they say they’re going to match you with someone that’s fantastic, you’re going to fall in love.”

  1. Anybody simply has to look at the promo’s for these show each week…. notice how they almost always show the outburst/meltdown/feud/tension…. of course this is what they are going to feature throughout each episode. If it was all peaches and cream, no one would watch…. therefore any outburst/meltdown/feud/tension is going to be given airtime over a happy day at the races! I can’t see why these contestants, by now, don’t understand that the main things shown will be [once again] outbursts/meltdowns/feuds/tension – no matter how brief.

  2. If those scenes he mentioned across the four days didn’t make it into the show, it’s because they weren’t that interesting or didn’t have any bearing on the outcome of their love story. The Wi-Fi blow up was interesting because you could see Nadia turning off him as it was happening. She didn’t like the way he was acting. Chances are, she’ll dump him at some point and this wifi blowup is an accurate representation of why she no longer finds him attractive. My guess is, that is the reason it was included in the show, to help explain why she dumps him. Perhaps Anthony could use this as a chance to look at himself. No one made him be rude to Cheryl – he did it himself. No one made him to be rude to the wifi lady – he did it himself.

  3. I have always said there’s nothing “real” about “reality” shows. They can be edited to show whatever the producers want. Simple solution? Don’t go on them if you don’t want yourself portrayed as a “villain”.

  4. (a) Is a legitimate complaint really “whinging”?
    (b) It’s odd how these stories almost always close with the complainer re-affirming their belief in the show’s premise. Almost like they’re designed to be controversially news-y, but without damaging the show’s brand at all…

    1. Legitimate or not, the producers have no obligation to portray characters fairly or accurately. They concoct storylines to get ratings and edit raw footage to suit.

They got what they wanted out of 4 days shooting. Anthony Manton knows that.
