Sherlock future still unclear

Scheduling issues for Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman may prevent more of UK detective series.

More speculation on the future of Sherlock today with co-creator Mark Gatiss again hinted that scheduling issues for Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman might prevent future seasons.

Speaking at the WhatsOnStage awards in London, Gatiss said, “I honestly don’t know if there will be any more. It’s incredibly difficult to get Benedict and Martin’s diaries to align.

“And obviously we left it in a very happy place…if that’s the end I’d be very happy where we left it.”

He also related how the last day of filming ended with a “whimper”.

“The last day tends to be an odd day—it’s never quite as you imagine it. But we did actually try and contrive it so the very last shot was Benedict and Martin running out of the building.

“Then we realised that we had to do one last shot the next day of Martin falling over—so that’s how it ended. As usual these things end with a whimper.”

Co-creator Steven Moffat recently said, “We love the show very much, and that means we don’t want to let go of it before we have to. All of us involved know that days like these will never come again and we’re in no hurry to see them over.”

If there is more due it will air in Australia on Stan, which has a lifetime contract of the hit series.

  1. I resubbed to Stan for Sherlock, although I am still with Stan as I find their library has improved dramatically since I last used them.

However Sherlock was not one of them which I enjoyed. I loved the first two seasons of the show, however the third felt a bit jank to me and this recent one was horrible.
It just lacked focus, it was more interested in telling us John’s lovelife than it was solving murders. The shock-twist villain was dumb and the whole thing just fell flat.

While I would watch more of it, I won’t be sad if I don’t get anymore. They just ruined it.
