Jason Isaacs to helm Star Trek: Discovery

Isaacs will play Captain Lorca, on the delayed Netflix series.

Jason Isaacs (The OA, Awake, Dig) will helm the Starship Discovery in the Netflix series Star Trek: Discovery.

He will play Captain Lorca, the captain of the Starship Discovery.

He joins previously-announced cast Sonequa Martin-Green as Rainsford, a lieutenant commander; Doug Jones as science officer Saru; Anthony Rapp as fellow science officer Stamets; James Frain as Sarek, a Vulcan astrophysicist and Spock’s father; Terry Serpico as Starfleet admiral Anderson; Maulik Pancholy as chief medical officer Nambue; and Sam Vartholomeos as junior Starfleet officer Connor.

Recurring roles include Michelle Yeoh as Georgiu, captain of another ship called the Shenzhou; Shazad Latif as Kol, the Klingon commanding officer; Chris Obi as a Klingon leader T’Kuvma; and Mary Chieffo as L’Rell, a Klingon commander.

Star Trek: Discovery already has a troubled path with two production delays and the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller.

Fuller had previously flagged a female lead for the series.

A new premiere date is still to be confirmed.

  1. Fascinating. As a Star Trek fan though not a devoted one, I read that a Facebook campaign had been started to encourage Netflix to revive the Star Trek Enterprise show which was rudely ended with an unsatisfying conclusion. Obviously, the Star Trek franchise ruled this out but I would like to see Jolene Blalock (T’Pol) given a guest appearance on this new show. Maybe in Season 2.

    1. I thought the same. Or perhaps I had read that she had been cast and assumed she was the Capt. Whilst I like Jason Isaacs, I would have liked Martin-Green as Captain too. It will be interesting to see what they come up with after losing a top-rate, think outside the square showrunner like Fuller,

    2. Yep you’re correct, Isaacs is playing the captain but that isn’t the lead character this time around. That’ll be Sonqequa’s character, the first officer (hence the female lead).

      1. I doubt Jason Isaac’s would sign a contract that has him as a supporting actor, besides if you watch YouTube the U.S. Studio politics for not wanting a person of colour to become too dominant was inferred by Sleepy Hollow star Tom Mison when he was questioned about the departure of his co star Nicole Beharie, he gave the impression that the shows producers didn’t want Nicole’s charismatic performance to distract audiences from Tom’s leading male character, which she was doing before her departure.
