Studios in next legal round over piracy

Studios name 74 more websites they want blocked for facilitating film & TV piracy.

Movie studios are heading back to the Federal Court to have telcos block access to more websites that facilitate piracy with film and TV content.

Studios including Village Roadshow, Paramount, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century FOX and Warner Bros want companies including Telstra, iiNet, Optus, Primus, TPG and more to block a further 74 websites.

The sites include Limetorrents, Putlocker, Kinogo, Megashare, KissCartoon, WatchFree, PrimeWire, Phimmoi, 123Movies, FMovies, EYNY and Spacemov. Some are registered in places such as Antigua and Barbuda, Estonia, Sweden, Tonga, and the Cocos Keeling Islands.

Fairfax reports the studios are trying to stay ahead of the pirating sites, which often change names or web addresses to avoid blocks.

Telstra is a 50% owner of Foxtel.

The next hearing is set for March 23.

  1. Pointless excercise, all these sites have to do is change their domain, for example Primewire has been around for a number of years and regularly changes from .ag to .im or whatever takes their fancy, only people achieving anything are the lawyers and their bank balances

  2. For the sake of it I tested the sites they have already reportedly blocked and on my home Telstra ADSL they worked fine, but then I shared my iPhone WiFi also Telstra and it blocked the exact same site, weird. But yes long story short free VPN on the like of Opera and it doesn’t make any difference.

I have no doubt there will come a day when even this won’t work but the biggest issue for most is how long it takes networks to show some popular programs and the costs when the rights go to Foxtel and streaming services like Netflix.

    1. Many of those are scammy aggregator sites too. Nice of them to help people with their internet hygiene by funnelling them towards less malware-laden alternatives, but you have to wonder about their reasoning…

    2. +1 most people could spend less than 10 minutes researching how to change the DNS settings in xyz router to google and then all this money spent on lawyers and courts is for naught.
