Doctor Blake axing is ‘disrespectful to an audience so loyal’

Craig McLachlan has again taken aim at ABC's decision to end Doctor Blake Mysteries.

Craig McLachlan has again taken aim at ABC’s decision to end The Doctor Blake Mysteries.

Telling News Corp he has colleagues on commercial shows that would kill for half of Blake’s audience, he added, “I will just say this, people vote with their remote.

“Take away the people’s show, when you are supposed to be the people’s network?

“I find it very, very disappointing. I find it exceedingly disrespectful to an audience that has been so extraordinarily loyal.”

The 5th season is said to be delayed to late 2017 following a decision to wrap up with a telemovie, tipped to shoot in the second half of the year.

A petition to stop the show’s axing has over 10,000 signatures.

  1. Very short-sighted of the ABC – this is a quality drama series with an excellent class, especially the versatile Craig McLachlan. It’s a show I wouldn’t miss and I even watch it again on 13th Street.

  2. I’ve spoken on this before but feel the need to weigh in again

Doctor Blake is one of the few FTA shows that we watch

That sentence alone is very powerful

and it puts us in front of the tv at its dedicated time slot as we have no need to ad shift it.

It’s a show that we look forward to watching

A credit to the production company and the ABC

They should sit down and negotiate a deal that could see them reap their investment back in the longer term

  3. Shows on commercial networks may kill for half of Blake’s audience, but they wouldn’t want its demos. This is the reason Seven axed APTCH – it had a large audience but poor demos. Mind you, these factors don’t necessarily apply to ABC programs, where ratings & demos are not the only concern.

  4. Craig is a magnificent talent on all levels – but I wonder how many of his fans are aware he’s an Executive Producer of the series? So he’s wielding a double edged sword with his argument.
I personally suspect the cost of creating each episode of Dr Blake – which this household has enjoyed immensely – has become too expensive for the ABC to recover their costs.
