John Simm returns to Doctor Who

Sci-fi villain is returning thanks to the power of time travel.

John Simm is returning as The Master to battle The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) in the forthcoming series of Doctor Who.

He was last seen as The Master on New Year’s Day 2010.

“I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what The Master gets up to in the next series,” said Simm.

Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer, says: “Nothing stays secret for long on Doctor Who but you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see exactly what The Master is up to and how he makes his return to face the Doctor. It’s been a huge pleasure to have fan favourites John Simm and Michelle Gomez face to face in the same role! It’s not often you get to see a solo personality clash.”

As previously announced, the season will also star Michelle Gomez as Missy – a later regeneration of The Master.

Doctor Who returns to ABC at 7.40pm on Sunday 16 April but will be available earlier that day on iview.

  1. They should have brought back the Doctor’s Daughter instead of John Simm because Michelle Gomez is the better version of the character The Master, I think Missy is much more fun and evil?

    1. Same wording as BBC press release more or less “John Simm to return as The Master in Doctor Who.” On an entertainment site, casting news is not a spoiler. What The Master does in the episode is a spoiler.

      1. I believe that this was the original spoiler alluded to by Moffat after the report published by the Sun when he asked people attending the special preview of the first episode not to give away the spoiler of the “Coming Next” trailer. Of course, the Sun revealed all, and the BBC were forced to release the above statement.

      2. This a huge spoiler in my book. Yes the BBC issued the news, but you didn’t have to reveal it in your headlines and photo. This is how DWN reported the news and did not spoil: doctorwhonews.net/2017/04/masterful-return-060417164508.html

Looks like I’ll have to stop visiting tvtonight until this series finishes. 🙁

        1. Honestly, this is Moffat-headed Nu Who – being spoiled in a headline is likely to be the most eventful (or least eye-rollingly stupid) thing that happens with Simm’s Master…
